There are many who are legally admitted into Canada, who have not bothered to renew it. They ask them selves why bother?

One fine day they want to travel and find themselves in a bind. They can use the Express service in those circumstances to expedite the issue, and receiving it. They can also get it 'couriered' to their location, by providing them with a return way bill.

As regards Legality, Once you have passed your five year mark, you are legally out of status, till you renew the PR card. No one is going to knock on your door and say you are an illegal alien.

But don't wait too long after finding that it has expired. Get it renewed. But they only issue it in Canada. NOW, they want you to make an appointment and PICK it up too. It is getting a little stickier. Call and see if they are open in the evening hours to pick the same after your work.

Hope this helps you a little.

Freddie.

-- This is COMPLETELY WRONG! The PR card is the ONLY acceptable proof of your status while ENTERING Canada from abroad. Even if you forget to renew the card while you are in Canada, you are NOT out of status. Your status is perfectly valid. The only thing is you will not be able to prove your status in case you leave Canada and are trying to re-enter Canada.

I second Cdn Dude. Expired PR card does not mean you lose your PR status. However, frequent travelers and PRs who don't live in Canada may have issues with an expired PR card.

I talked to the CIC Call center and they did confirm what cdn_dude said.

Having a valid PR card doesn't mean you are in-status. To be in-status, you should have spent 2 out of any 5 year period since you became a PR in Canada

Having a expired PR card doesn't mean you are out of status if you spent 2 years out of any continous block of 5 year period taken since you became a PR in Canada.

While a valid PR card is a requirement for entering Canada from abroad., if you can furnish the evidence that you have lived 2 years of residency in Canada out of 5 years, you can also apply for a travel document if the PR card expired.

The O.P. was admitted into Canada as a PR.
He has been living here for what ever number of years....
He holds an expired PR card that is one or two years passed the five year mark, and wants some assistance. Please help him.

My statement is, there are many like him that are still living in Canada without knowing what to do.

He is entitled to renew his card. He can renew it in an Express line.
He sends it through courier with a return way bill to receive it as fast as he can.

Legally he is out of status. He needs to renew it as soon as he found that. 'Do not wait too long after the discovery'.

He now applies for it. When there is a letter stating that it is ready, he goes and PICKS it at the prescribed location, and in person. (Hope they are open, during the after hours period. I hate to see some one loose a days pay for collecting it.)

Hope this clarifies the matter to one and all.

Freddie.

I thought you would understand it after people posted so many replies - we all understand that he is NOT out of status just because of the expired PRcard. Hope this is clarified (to you) after reading these posts!
