After the expiration of my PR card, How long can I hold my legal status?
i.e. If a year or two pass after my card has expired, will I be able to renew it and hold my legal status or will I be living illegally?
Experts Please HELP!!!
There are many who are legally admitted into Canada, who have not bothered to renew it. They ask them selves why bother?
One fine day they want to travel and find themselves in a bind. They can use the Express service in those circumstances to expedite the issue, and receiving it. They can also get it 'couriered' to their location, by providing them with a return way bill.
As regards Legality, Once you have passed your five year mark, you are legally out of status, till you renew the PR card. No one is going to knock on your door and say you are an illegal alien.
But don't wait too long after finding that it has expired. Get it renewed. But they only issue it in Canada. NOW, they want you to make an appointment and PICK it up too. It is getting a little stickier. Call and see if they are open in the evening hours to pick the same after your work.
Hope this helps you a little.
Freddie.

I second Cdn Dude. Expired PR card does not mean you lose your PR status. However, frequent travelers and PRs who don't live in Canada may have issues with an expired PR card.

I talked to the CIC Call center and they did confirm what cdn_dude said.
Having a valid PR card doesn't mean you are in-status. To be in-status, you should have spent 2 out of any 5 year period since you became a PR in Canada
Having a expired PR card doesn't mean you are out of status if you spent 2 years out of any continous block of 5 year period taken since you became a PR in Canada.
While a valid PR card is a requirement for entering Canada from abroad., if you can furnish the evidence that you have lived 2 years of residency in Canada out of 5 years, you can also apply for a travel document if the PR card expired.
