You cannot go wrong with either a corolla or a civic. It is the easiest choice you can make.
However, the Civic is one of the most stolen cars in North America which is good enuf reason for the scumbags at insurance companies to pillage you with high premiums. If you have a lot of experience and have held your license for a long time it shouldn't be a problem I guess. This was the only reason I had to stay away from a Civic.
It is a severely depreciating commodity. Resale value should be least of your concern...especially if you will keep it for a long time cus they last. Again, in any case, either one has good resale value.

Good decision, 2009 is a major model improvement with more agressive looks and more importantly more standard features like Side Airbags etc which were optional in 08. I would go for a 09. Also check out Camry LE it is sweet and an awesome value for money.
Plus the Corolla 09 is 2K cheaper than 08 for similar specs. Toyota, Lexus and VW are the only manufacturers who have adjusted prices of their cars given the stronger dollar, this makes corolla a even better choice compared to the civic

Thanks . I was also considering 2009 ~ lets see what kind of deals are available - I am in no hurry so will visit all dealers in the GTA for that extra discount ....
Any suggestions what tips should one bear in mind while talking to the salesperson - I mean I will check carcost or APA first ..... I am ready for cash down / financing ..... and I am willing to wait till winters , if there s an observed trend of promos during winters .... although I would wish to buy it before their onset so as to get used to the vehicle ......

I wonder why people have put down Lancer as a no no?? No one has given any reason.
When I came to Canada, my first choice was a Lancer having driven it most before coming here and being extremely satisfied. In the far east, it was best value for money for mid size cars (yes, 1400-1600 cc cars are mid size cars there) - Corrolla and Civic were way to expensive there. However, since I could not find a dealer of Mitsubishi and didn't see many Mitsubishis on the road, I decided not to buy simply because with lack of dealers and lack of cars on the road, servicing and parts would be more expensive.
Still wonder why people do not like Lancer (bad experience in India????)

Mitsubhi quality is really bad and is on par with Amercan cars even though it has a Jap name...
Honda and Toyota pay off for the added expense in better and reliable Quality..

wait till winter, from my experience, dealers try to get rid of their excess inventory before the end of the fin yr, thereby, giving you more negotiating power. Get in touch with me for the cost of the 09 Corolla, I have the APA price for all the models.
Also, the web pages given below contains "actual" customer feedbacks, and not someone who has been paid by the car manufacturers, and may be helpful in deciding which car to buy.
