I recently rented a 2010 Hyundai Accent 4 dr and found it to be quite peppy ..... So while shopping for a used vehicle have shortlisted it .....
Which of the following is a better pick ........ I am buying in 2 days ......
2008 Hyundai Accent .
60000 kms .
Full Power Options
1.6 110 hp .
3 Yrs Power-train warranty .
CAD 8000/-
Pros : Warranty , great fuel consumption, peppy enough for city and good on Hwy .... might have a good resale value after 5 yrs though I wonder how much .... expecting 3K after 5 yrs .
2003 Toyota Corolla CE .
100000 kms .
1.8 123 hp
No warranty . Vehicle in an excellent shape .
No timing belt needed ever .
CAD 7000/-
Pros : Heavier engine , better fuel consumption than Accent despite heavier engine , better reliability , great resale ..... after 5 years and 200K kms ... expect it to be 2.5K ......
Am I wrong on my re sale expectations ? The Accent is a 5 yr newer car and has warranty whereas Corolla is a superior vehicle.
Both the vehicles are in great shape ...... Quick advice needed please ......

Based on mileage info, looks like Accent has been sort of abused or driven a lot in less than couple years as compared to corolla. The assumption on resale value on both could be wrong. If using it for long term then any of the vehicle is good. If the choie is strict then, I would go with Corola since it has consistent mileage and proven performance (little more space and 1K less).
Have you looked at civics lately? you prolly will get a better deal in civics because it is abundantly availble and head to head brand with Corola.
(e.g. you may get a 2006 civic with approx 80k+ kms for 7K or less, again just an opinion).
Power-train warranty is a trap. Every manufacturers have different coverage options under PT warranty. Make sure that it covers all the expenses of engine including transmission, as I heard that Hundai cars have problems in transmissions later on.
I would suggest to go with Corolla but again make sure the conditions especially rusting. If it has no or very little rustings which can be controlled by rustproofing. Toyota cars generally long last and parts available easily.
Also get the car history report. I got it from Carfax as it also shows the details of accidents.
I would buy the Corolla. Always easier to sell, very reliable, has proven record. If I had a little extra budget, I would go for the Camry, same year. Five years is long time, as your family grows, you will thank yourself you bought a family sized sedan.

Thanks Folks ,
My only thoughts in favor for the Hyundai Accent was that it was 5 yrs younger than the Corolla and it had some power train warranty ....
Corollas are reliable and their resale value holds well .... Plus this car is in v good shape ........ very well maintained .... but my concern was .... 5 years & 100K more down , what value would it hold vis a vis the Hyundai Accent .......
How much would be the resale values of 10 yr old Corolla today as compared to a 5 yr old Hyundai Accent ............ 2000 Corolla.... 3-4k and a 2005 Accent may be like 5-6K today .............. Is that correct ???
Plus more opinions are welcome .... Thanks in advance ....

Hi Fido,
How much would you be driving it. If you drive 20,000 kms a year then Accent would be 160 k after 5 years. Today 2005 Accent with 160 K cannot fetch $5000, may be more like $2500.
It is hard to predict how much repairs would you be incurring over 5 year term since that would be more of a drain than resale value. Gap between age of vehicle is 5 years, which is a huge gap.

Why you emphasize more on resale value? Think this way if you use the car until it dies.
I have seen people who still uses 94 corolla.... If you maintain well you can still drive up to 300k. You can drive it for more 8 to 9 years and scrap it. For corolla, you can get parts and mechanics ready to repair for even older models which is not possible in case of Hyundai.
