Some of the Cons of staying in the UAE

1. Awful Summers (6-8 months of the year). Avg. Temp. 40-50 Celsius couple that with humidity of 80-90% and it makes a terrible cocktail. In those months, you wonder whether the money is worth the conditions. There is a limit a person can stay in a controlled temperature env. all the time. :(

2. South Asians will always be 3rd rate residents. 1st are the locals, 2nd are the white skinned folks. Most Locals (Not all) have an attitude problem with south asians. :(

3. With the overwhelming south asian population invariably carries with it the 'chalta hai' attitude. This attitude towards work brings the work qualiy & work culture down. :D

4. Unless you have at least half of what the OP's offer is, you are doomed to stay in traffic infested & obscenely urban Sharjah. Curse youself everyday when travelling to work to Dubai & back while you negotiate awful traffic conditions. This doesn't apply to AUH (but within AUH, traffic can be equally terrible). :)

5. Except for a few corniches (waterfront lined with parks) the landscape is desolete & ugly urban structures. Turn off the taps & the country's parks would roast in a week. In short it is a hostile environment. However, the new Dubai can be pretty to look at for a few weeks. ;)

6. Country is filled with educated illetierates who have the lowest regard for environment. You have plastic flying during a high winds instead of birds or foliage. Ugly! Ugly! Ugly!

7. Someone earlier mentioned 'working with top expat brains' is seriously misinformed as most of the white expats are there due to their skin colour and are not necessarily superior in their work ethic to South asians. :p

8. Exploitation - South Asian mgmt. with 'work till you die' attitude. People can only talk about money. Remember nothing is free. More money brings more pressure. Most returning expats complain of inferior health.

9. Most ME south asian expats who have the means / age / circumstances favouring them will want to migrate to a 1st world country. As they say, treat ME as a place to earn & accumulate money and move on to a 1st world country.

10. Someone mentioned about the 'happening' night life. LOL. ROFL. How many evenings is a person going to spend in that *happening* place till he / she finds that pleasures are in life's simple things. :D

Please note that although the above are only my views but most of them could be generally validated & of someone who puts environment & quality life above money. Good luck with your decisions!!

Cheers,

Good comparison, pros and cons.

But no one puts all these points in paper and decide. Most of the people decide to go to UAE for making money.

In short, if anybody starve for money goto UAE.

If you have decent earnings here and satisfied with the earnings, stay back in canada.

Ya - happening nite life ... lol ... I could not stand that nite life even when I was single in Dubai ... but you know, Please Pardon that 'someone' ...

Good on you mate - you lasted there for 10 yrs. But are you sure, when you say Safe Country. Yes, Safe enough to leave your house unlocked because of near to Sharia Rules. Locals are not interested in money - but safe for female as well? Again, may be safe for married & 30+. I dont think it is safe for younger girls. Lot of things go under cover, nothing gets reported - unless offender is an expat.

But I guess - OP has already made his decision ... I hope not based someone :D

Yep, you are quite close to the fact in your description. Since it might be unreported, I am unaware of specifics. But I'd still insist the it is a secure life for females compared to all other countries in subcontinent.
If the ladies can use common sense & avoid the dodgy areas & dodgy company then they do have a secure & often thrive in that secured life.

I myself haven't come across an incident involving eve teasing, or misbehaving with women in the workplace or outside in the country.
As it is with all countries there are dubious places where flesh trade does thrive. And Dubai is no exception. Just avoid those areas as done in other countries. :)

Oh, BTW I can't still stop smiling on the 'Happening Night life' comment. :D

Cheers,
Un|tZ :)

I totally second UNITZ views about abudhabi...

with my last 16 years abudhabi stay i could tell abudhabi is a very secured place for families...

with reagrds to the salary offered to the poster i would say.. not a bad offer.

dont go with cut and paste articals... get some feed back from abudhabi residents......

Hi Tungrus.......

To be honest right now ME job market is not good.

with exception to KSA is bit better in terms of domestic production and oil ind.

where as UAE is kind of folowing the wait and watch aproch with investment in infra and public spending.

With my previous canadian company exp i can tell for sure you will have a edge with your canadian Passport but still your skin comes in to picture.

I would like to tell you the IT market is not that big in UAE comparing to India and canada in UAE. most of the time Indian outsourcers are taking the big jobs, that means you know what will be the pay scale for IT jobs...

If you are in Engineering or Oil field industry you will be having good chance with your canadina PP.

camnay,
