Anybody around Wellesley parliament square? Is this a safe area? A friend of mine staying in Huntley street mentioned that there are always police around the area. Rentals are available from November. Am planning to move there.
Be careful as Church/Wellesley area is known for a very high concentration of Gays & Lesbians. If I would be at your place (as a family person), I wouldn't like to expose my kids to that kind of culture.
But that's my personal opinion (not sure what other's will say on this).

My husband works near to CN tower that's the reason I wanted to be in downtown. He has seen a apartment in mabelle avenue and says it's good. I will go over in the weekend to look around the area and finalize. Also looks like engg jobs are around etobicoke and Mississauga so mabelle could be a good place.
Mabelle is a nice place.
The place is composed mostly of Middle eastern , Indian population. Most of the Middle eastern population there is on either welfare or labour jobs and hence the quality of life will be a bit low. But it is a very safe place and also a great location, how ever a bit depressing. in 2002, when I wanted to stay there, they were asking for 3 months salary slip and references which I was not able to give. But now I guess lot of housing has come up so you can stay without all these salary slips.
Daycare around that area would be full, so you will not get any daycare.
I used to stay at Dundas Street West and Jane street which is predominantly white. Rents are low but networking will be Zero. It is just 2 or 3 bus stops to Islington Station.
From ISlington to CN tower is easily 1/2 hour by subway. I would avoid downtown as it is full of drug addicts and gays. It is not a good place for Indian's to stay.
I would prefer west of CN tower like Old Mill, Kipling, High park etc.. (however in these places, Indian networking will be very less).
Hope this helps.

Work close CN Tower means, around Go Union station.
Where you stay in the initial period is likely to influence where you settle and also will influence your overall perception due to environment. So its very important that you pick the right place that is good for your family which is kid friendly, low crime, good environment with parks.
Square one area is always something I recommend to families, go for a walk in the evening and see how you feel. Cooks ville go station is 5 minutes on a Mississauga bus and hop on to Go train to reach downtown in 20 minutes.
While it could cost you $200-$250 more, consider living in a good Condo in square one area which would have good quality swimming pool, Gym, Sauna, play area for kids, Squash, theater, concierge. It would make a huge difference in your lifestyle.
I lived in Mabelle in my initial years, while it was comfortable for my commute, my family didn't enjoy the area. Not any question about safety but very old and boring atmosphere.

Lalitha:
I am guessing that in the initial days, you would want to save money.
I used to live in the Square 1 area (1 bed+ Den) and I paid a rent of $ 1475+ Hydro. The cheapest in that area was like $ 1150 but then it had the fear of Gold theft problem.
Your sole aim should be to save money on rent , live near Go Stn/Subway, live in a nice area of desi's (Now this is a catch 22 situation. Most of the desi's in good positions own a house and live far away from apartments. Apartment desi's are mostly labourers and can spew negative things about Canada, lowering your morale).
I would suggest Old Dundas road (Near Dundas Street West and Jane st). Rent for a semi basement apartment (one bed) used to be $ 775 (in 2006). This area does not have many destitutes/immigrants and hence you can get decent services. It is near a very good white area (where I used to go with my friends kids on haloween and collect like 1 to 2 kg of sweets). It is also near Islington subway stn.. But the main problem here will be lack of Desi's.
Avoid basements esp. those owned by Desi's. I have seen examples where they will treat you just like crap, intruding in your private life, your areas etc.. Always go for a apartment, where you can lead a carefree life inside your house.
Trust this helps.
BTW, Can someone inform me as to how much these downtown new apartments cost for rent (1 bed)?
Peace by Murali
