For me, if its a expensive car (less than 6/8k), I dont mind getting from private sellers. I bought a 2007 Saturn Vue SUV in 2011 for 5K; listed for 7k; offered 5k, they said yes. It was a good SUV, kept it for a year and sold to a relative when he came to Canada.

Fro cars above 10k, I have always bought from dealers. I realized that there was much more room for negotiation with dealers. Also, I got most of the items fixed by the dealers, like tire replacement etc. We bought 3 cars so far from dealers, ranging from 12k to 30k. Maybe its me, I was always comfortable buying from dealers especially when its more than 10k.

Again, nothing wrong in going the private seller route if you are comfortable. Also, the dealership might not stand behind a 10 year old trade in car compared to a 2 year old trade in car - I dont have any stats on this one; just guessing. Good luck.

If needed , I might prefer buying 2 cars for the price of a single Merc as my utility would be doubled.

There is a myth that used Mercs/BMWs etc are expensive. I bought a used 2006 Merc in 2009 from Dealer and I was the first one to do it within my friends circle here. There was an initial surprise since I had changed from a used Camry. However, when I told them about this deal, they themselves started to look for such cars. Believe it or not, almost all of my group of friends (about a dozen) have now shifted to used Mercs/BMWs and some of us have even changed our second cars to such "luxury" cars. Such luxury cars have a very high depreciation in the first few years - percentage wise, since rich people change cars for models usually, not because it is old, and so even though the cars have been kept very well, there aren't as many buyers for them as Toyotas and Hondas have. Someone has already remarked that Merc and BMWs do not have great resale values - which is true - and so the person who is buying them is getting a better deal than when buying a Toyota or a Honda!

I find my 9 year old Merc much better than my 6 year old Camry that I had and it still looks 3-4 year old (infact 2 months ago some of my colleagues were in the car with me when going out for lunch and one of them remarked that she couldn't believe that this car was anything more than 3 year old!!)

Not only I am getting pleasure of driving a nice car, but also, it does help a bit in social and official circles!! My second used car is Lexus RX - bought as 4 year used, with additional warranty for four years for below 30K, which now is 6 year old and warranty is valid another 2 years!! And it is a pleasure to ride that too - but not as much as my older Merc!

Yes. Valid points. No doubt about it.

It all depends on the individual. The only thing that I am worried about it is the repair cost. Servicing will cost more and if by chance, there is some damaage, you will have to spend a lot to repair it. Life will be fine as long as the going is good.

However, cars upto 5 years (high kms) and 10 years (low kms) will generally be OK.
Just if you can afford a higher initial cost and a higher servicing cost, it is fine.

You will also have to reduce the price more to sell it off quickly.

As you mentioned, the major advantage will be among your social / office circle and your self esteem.

I would not recommend private seller for high price used car ( unless you know the seller) - go on internet and find good reputed dealer ( you can read reviews on different website) - I would recomand to go to Brand dealers - they hold some reputation and you have chance of going back to head office if you are not satisfied.

buying cheap used car - private is best option

If you have time and patience then why don't you look around sudbury, windsor, timmins etc.. like driving 2 hrs can save you couple of thousand dollar then why not ???
