sounds good TK!
I'll check te route details.
I guess weather wise it wouldn't be either too hot or cold that time..
Thanks!
What TK says looks right, of having Madurai as base. R'waram, Kodai, etc. can be covered easily.
Another overnight halt at Tirunelveli can help in reaching K'kumari and other places around like Kutrtalam and Papanasam/Kalakkad Tiger Sanctuary (made famous by the recent movie).
Vaishnavite Temples around T'veli are very ancient and well maintained by TVS group companies. Least harassment of devotees/tourists compared to other temples in TN. One particular place is Thirukurungudi both below and up the hill range was very beautiful. But tourists take only to known places like Madurai, Rameshwaram etc. and miss the real TN. Road between T'veli to K'kumari is excellent and can be done in a few hours.
Third halt at Kumbakonam will cover most of paddy field greenery and temples of original Tanjore district. Rock Fort at Trichy may be difficult to climb for senior citizens as there are no cable cars.

Thanks Ramar,
When you say having Madurai as base, are you suggesting day trip to other places.
Initially I was thinking of keep moving from one place to another and that night there. so overall wouldn't have to travel more than 4-5 hours.
1 more thing, Do I need cab in Rameswaram/Kanyakumari to see temples and scenic points, or all of them are at one place.
I still have time to book tickets/cabs, so browsing through all the options.
Thanks!
Lol MCG 7,
Which world are you in?
SI is very famous for Veg. food. In fact, there are more veg. restaurants than NV restaurants. May be you were looking for road side Veg. restaurants which are very few in number.
Never seen a missionary trying to convert Hindu's (in front of tourist palaces of SI). I agree that the % of christians are more in SI but not what you say.
Waiters are all the same all over India. May be your waiter had a bad day, that day.
Not many know Hindi but they will help you if you speak in ENglish rather than in Hindi.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
You have to ask the bus driver to stop at a pure veg restaurant. Lot of roadside restaurants on highways could be a mix of veg and non veg.
You may not be able to pack a lot of cooked food for your roadside journey as in South India's warm climate food gets spoilt very easily. Idlis might last a day.
I would suggest not to order north indian items in a typical south indian restaurant. It may not come up to your expectations. Stick with south indian items like idli, dosa, pongal, curd rice, lemon rice, etc.

Thanks for the advise MCG7,Raj,
Have lived in south for 7-8 years, so food shouldn't be a problem.
I was checking online and found few veg only north/south indian food options.
As am in no rush for Darshan or anything, thugs wont get anything from me.
@Rajcanada -
You're right, expecting good north indian food in a south indian restaurant is not possible.
If I go to SI restaurant will stick to SI food.
