When I contacted the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association regarding the topic under discussion, I received the following reply:
---------------------------------------
Dear Sir:

We acknowledge receipt of your e-mail dated August 15th and thank you for your inquiry. We do apologize for the delay to answer you.

A few companies sell health care policies for visitors and returning Canadians. Most companies require that coverage be purchased prior to or within the first week of arrival in Canada. Exceptions to this rule include:

Trent Health : 1-800-387-4770
Blue Cross Ontario: 1-800-873-2583 which now requires that an application be made within 30 days.

Should you wish to discuss the matter of this letter and require more information, please call our Consumer Assistance Centre:

in Toronto: 1-800-268-8099/416-777-2344, and press 3 on touch tone phone to speak to a counsellor;

We appreciate the trust you place in us. We hope the information will be of help and thank you for your inquiry.

Yours sincerely,

Suzanne Comtois, B.A.A., FLMI, ACS
Manager, Consumer Assistance Centre

aseem:
When you land here you have a 3 month waiting period before OHIP kicks in. You can purchase medical insurance prior to coming here for the 3 months form a private company. If however you land here and decide to buy insurance from here for the 3 months companies can and will impose waiting periods of anywhere from 2 - 7 days for sickness.
