While landing, I have to show funds for me and my wife. I was wondering whether i could bring these funds (equivalent to 13000CAD) in cash.

In case you bring in more than $10,000 CAD in cash or monetary instruments, be sure to declare the same to the Customs on arrival. You could also check the Canadian Border Services Agency website at: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4151/rc4151-e.html

Does this 10,000 dollar limit hold for one adult, or for both husband and wife?
In other words, if husband and wife each bring 9500 CAD ( total 19000 CAD), do they have to declare the amount and sign the relevant forms? (as each adult is carrying cash below 10,000 CAD )?

I have read on another site that the bank statement you write about will need to be of funds in a bank in Canada.

How can you show funds in a bank in Canada when you're entering Canada for the first time. So far as my knowledge goes you cannot open a bank account in Canada from overseas.

The immigration officer in my case has accepted that the bank statement is sufficient proof of funds. Further, he also told me that the requirement is to bring the funds within a year of landing.

Here's an extract from the CIC website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomer/guide/section-02.html#1

'You must also bring with you enough money to cover living expenses such as rent, food, clothing and transportation for a six-month period. You may be asked to show proof of your funds. '

I don't think the documentation given to me by the Consulate ever said you have to carry the cash with you when you land. It only asks for evidence that you have sufficient funds. Well, that's my interpretation when I came over here in October 2003.

Not the foggiest idea. Their publication is silent on this aspect.

In the UAE at least, I know for sure that at least the Royal Bank of Canada and HSBC can help open an account in Canada.

CAD 10,000 is not a 'limit' as in the maximum amount of monetary instruments (cash, checks, stocks, bonds etc) that you can physically carry in to Canada. There is no limit on the amount of money you can bring into or take out of Canada.

It is the maximum amount the Canadian Government allows you to physically carry into Canada WITHOUT DECLARING it at the customs.

I understand that, but is this limit per adult, or per group of 6 (or 10, or 100) people travelling together?
