The Cynic
I am canadian born and educated but my family is from India. As I have mentioned on other posts I work with many professional immigrants and I have to say that I agree that there is a serious problem between Immigration policies and the employers out there.
I dnnt think its just about english language. I think smart and efficient employers recognize the value of technical skills and related experience. Just like in every country of the world, Canada will have competent management and incompetent management. Unfortunately sometimes its the luck of the draw the ones we cross paths with
From what I understand, Canada is trying to recruit foreign professionals because the majority of the current workforce age group(aged 16-65) is over the age of 45. In ten years many thousands of people may retire, and leave a sudden panic and large gap in many industries. Hence they are trying to recruit now to save themselves this problem. However, what there seems to be a gap of understanding in IS..that what do these professionals do at present when there is a surplus of them and more coming each day? By the time 10 years comes around..most will have forgotten their skills which defeats the purpose.
However who ever said government was logical? ..One hand generally doesnt know what the other hand is doing..and so the policy makers probably didnt anticipate the racism and bias in the marketplace today. They may not have thought about the long term effects at all. However I would say its still the employers that have hiring power..not the government. Educate employers.
No doubts competition is fierce especially in Ontario and BC. Immigrants are competing for professional jobs along with Canadian citizens and having to deal with issues of : bias, racism, sexism, ageism (yes its abundant here)again from employers..plus financial issues to keep their families above water...plus learning to 'network' and make contacts..especially when you are new to a city and dont know many people. I know people may have negative thoughts about 'employment centres' and job counsellors but I think sometimes it can help to an extent prepare you to job search in your city..
I wanted to throw a comment to Crenshaw. Crenshaw you undermine yourself when you respond to people's genuine thoughts and then insult them. Your opinions may differ but you dont have the right to act as if YOU are better than people. They struggle daily like you do. Every one has a slightly varied style of communication in the world. No two are alike. I think real education isnt measured by the # of letters after your name..its measured by the understanding you have of the world around you.
To those of you who read and post daily..I commend you for having the strength to find a place like this and write your thoughts feelings and even the entire CD website! That shows strength and determination.. the things that made this country only a few hundred years ago. Canada NEEDS immigrants. It was built on immigrants. I hope all your dreams come true here or where ever you go. If you do stay..know you'll be part of shaping this country..
I also feel humbled because I have grown up with a really different view of immigrants and only in the last few years have I come to really understand whats happening. I am not an employer, but if there is a way a normal person like myself can help..let me know.
I would like to know whether most people find it difficult to obtain job Interviews..or if they get interviews but find it difficult to get the job offer.
Thank you.
