Overview of the IBO
The International Baccalaureate Organization is a non-profit educational organization that was established in 1968. A 16 member Council of Foundation governs the IBO. Fees from IB world schools, with additional income from workshops and catalogue sales, fund it.
Programs
The IBO offers three programs to a wide variety of schools located throughout the world:
• The Diploma Programs, for students in the final two years of school before university;
• The Middle Years Programs (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16;
• The Primary Years Programs (PYP) is for students aged 3 to 12.
Services
The IBO provides IB world schools with:
• Detailed curriculum guidelines for each program and subject area
• Teacher training workshops
• Online access to 3,000 education resources, subject area experts, and discussion sessions with teachers at IB schools throughout the world
• External assessment of Diploma Programs students' work
• Procedures for school-based (internal) assessment of student work
The Middle Years Programs

The IBO’s Middle Years Programs (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills for students aged 11-16 years. The five-year program offers an educational approach that embraces yet transcends traditional school subjects. It follows naturally the Primary Years Programs and serves as excellent preparation for the Diploma Programs.

Schools may subscribe to any or all of the programs, although none is a prerequisite for another.

The framework is flexible enough to allow a school to include other subjects not determined by the IBO but which might be required by local authorities. After consultation with the IBO, and provided certain conditions are met, schools enjoy much flexibility in terms of language of instruction and languages taught. The MYP, like the other two programs of the International Baccalaureate Organization, is based on the premise that education can foster understanding among young people around the world. Intercultural awareness is central to the program, to enable future generations to live more peacefully and productively than we do today.

Students at this stage—early puberty to mid-adolescence—are in a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development. This is a time of uncertainty, sensitivity, resistance and questioning. An educational program needs to provide them with discipline, skills and challenging standards, but also with creativity and flexibility. The IBO builds its program around these considerations but it is also concerned that students develop a personal value system by which to guide their own lives, as thoughtful members of local communities and the larger world.

The Diploma Programs

The International Baccalaureate Organization’s Diploma Programs was created in 1968. It is a demanding pre-university course of study that leads to examinations. It is designed for highly motivated secondary school students aged 16 to 19.
The program has earned a reputation for rigorous assessment, giving IB diploma holders access to the world’s leading universities. The Diploma Program’s grading system is criterion-referenced, which means that each student’s performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement. These are consistent from one examination session to the next and are applied equally to all schools.
The IBO has shown, over the course of 30 years, that students are well prepared for university work. Universities in more than 100 countries accept them.

The program is a comprehensive two-year international curriculum, available in English, French and Spanish.
It generally allows students to fulfill the requirements of their national or state education systems. The Diploma Programs incorporates the best elements of national systems, without being based on any one.
Internationally mobile students are able to transfer from one IB school to another. Students who remain closer to home benefit from a highly respected international curriculum.

The program was born of efforts to establish a common curriculum and university entry credential for students moving from one country to another. International educators were motivated by practical considerations but also by an idealistic vision. They believed that students should share an academic experience that would emphasize critical thinking, intercultural understanding and exposure to a variety of points of view.

The Primary Years Programs

The Primary Years Programs (PYP), for students aged 3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole child, in the classroom but also in the world outside, through other environments where children learn. It offers a framework that meets children’s several needs: academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural.

The PYP serves as an excellent introduction to the Middle Years Programs, but it is not a prerequisite for this or for the Diploma Programs.

The program is a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning with an international curriculum model that provides:

Guidelines for what students should learn

A teaching methodology

Assessment strategies

After consultation with the International Baccalaureate Organization, and provided certain conditions are met, schools enjoy much flexibility in terms of language of instruction and languages taught.

At the heart of the PYP is a commitment to structured inquiry as a vehicle for learning.

Six organizing themes help teachers and children explore knowledge in the broadest sense of the word.

Teachers and students use key questions that are concept-based to structure the units of inquiry.

They acquire and apply Tran disciplinary skills while developing an understanding of these important concepts.

The development of explicit attitudes and the expectation of socially responsible behavior are also essential elements of the program.
