Looking at the points table, I was wondering what I would do if I were the Captain or Manager of SL team for the match between India and SL on 23rd.
If SL was to win this game, India would be out of the tournament and Bangladesh and WE would advance to the super 8.
If that were the case, theoretically, we could meet BD only in the semi-finals or finals- depending on how the placing are after the super 8.
However, practically speaking, the chances of BD reaching the final four is almost nil except for a miracle again and again during the super 8. This in turn would mean we would meet some other good teams, in the semis and finals, other than India which is at par with us on paper.
However, if India were to win the match on Friday, there are good chances - definitely better than BD, that it will advance to final four, and we could meet them in Semis or Finals.
So if we are confident that we can beat India today, we should be able to beat them in Semis or Finalstoo. Moreover, as a South Asian, we would love to have another South Asian team in the final four.
However, if India were to beat us on 23rd, we would still be in super 8 because of a superb run rate we have amassed with no fear of either India or BD beating us down on that part.
With our place secure in the Super 8, I would prefer India to be in the super 8 than BD.
The only way I can do it, is to let India win. And then not only will I be a good South Asian, but also have good cricket to watch and play!
But then, I am neither the Captain, nor the Manager of the Sri Lankan team.
For that matter, I am not even a Sri Lankan!
All I can therefore do is to pray that that the Sri Lankan team thinks in the same manner as I do – for the good of cricket! and to get the full value of the $180 subscription that I have made!

Mumbai Maazi Ladki ...
Valid points but let me play the devil's advocate here.
I disagree for 2 reasons:
If we have learned anything from India's performance in the WC so far is this that, do NOT leave your fate in the hands of others (read net run rate). However improbable it is for Bangladesh to have a net run rate better than India's, it is theoretically possible and will give them sleepless nights till Friday at least.
Also, should SL allow India to win, then they would carry forward zero points into the next leg of the race and this could prove to be a very costly mistake. They could miss a semi-final berth due to those 2 missing points.
So go for a straight win rather than trying to play a strategic game. It can badly backfire and hence is not worth the risk.

SL by this time knows who they will be playing in the super 8. If they beat India they would be B1 with 6 points. If Bdesh beats Bermuda, then India and Bdesh will have 4 pts each though India has a good RR. So SL has to decide how what they have to do in super 8. And not to foret the bookies.

That's some truly optimistic thinking, Chandresh. Like someone said, you're a pretty die hard Indian supporter to come up with that![]()
I hope SL play the game hard and give India a run for the money. And I think they will. We'll find out tomorrow but anything less from SL would be a huge disappointment to me.
And oh yeah, I hope India play harder! Let's all vote for a good game.
One huge advantage that Sri Lanka has over India is that, they are under no undue pressure to win. A win will be good for Sri Lanka but their survival does not hinge on it. We can't say the same for India though.
Crowd support - Another minus for India today. I presume all fans (everyone other than Indian fans) will root for Sri Lanka for the simple reason that their own team (be it NZ, SA, WI, etc.) will have to play Bangladesh and not India in the Super 8, makes it that much easier for them.
This one match will bring in the much needed reality check. Testing times indeed.
