Hi,

I am looking to buy a good quality bed mattress. Any suggestions as to where I can find good deals in the GTA?
Also, it would be great if you could suggest a few brands.

Thanks,

MG.

sleepcountry is the best, i heard some deals going on for mismatched sets on radio, also you can try http://www.simplyelegant.ca/ (victoria park & eglinton) - he delivers free in GTA, the brands are any of the 3s's - Sealy, Serta & Simmon

always try before you buy, the more you pay the better mattress you get (cheaper ones less than $200 will give you backache guaranteed)

This mattress business is another big ripoff like the furniture business.

It is all marketing without substance.

I'll buy it from a desi manufacturer(who will also put a label of Sealy, Serta, Kingkoil or anything you want) who are predominantly located in Brampton.

There is a guy(Guyanese of Indian origin) who advertizes in allthe desi newspapers and has his shop across the OLD SEARS OUTLET STORE(now moved) on Queen Street, Brampton.

I found his prices extremely reasonable and also the quality as good as the big stores.

I promise nobody will give you as cheap and good quality as Gary. I have searched almost 2-3 months and luckily I got him through kijiji when he advertised he is giving the mattresses at factory price. I bought othropaedic mattress twin $90 each and queen size $ 150 each and boxes for $40 (twin) and $60 (queen) and I found them very good. No backache. so, please call GARY 416-319-8851. He charges delivery $ 20/- (one time).

I hope this helps.

Here are the notes I took when I was looking to buy a mattress. I was tired of sleeping on a cheap mattress and wanted to invest in a good quality mattress which would last for at least 10-15 years.

Major quality brands available in Canada -Sealy, Spring Air (four seasons), and Simmons.

Stores – Ikea, Sears, The Brick, Leon's, The Bay, The Sleep Country.
(Ikea’s price range is low but it carries its own brands. Ikea’s quality is not as good as the above mentioned quality brands). Sears and Bay carry Sealy, Simmens and their own private brands. We got the best deal from The Bay; they had a promotion going when we went to their store. Avoid desi stores like the plague as they have a bad reputation of after-sales service.

Types of bed : Spring, Foam, Foam Topped, Futons

Spring – 3 types of springs. Quality spring beds come with at least 10 years of warranty.

1. Open (or Bonnell) springs - There are at least 325 springs in a 150cm / 5ft mattress. Widely used in budget and mid-priced beds.
2. Continuous springs - Continuous spring beds fall into the mid-to-high price ranges.
3. Pocket springs - They are made from rows of small springs; each housed in its own fabric ’pocket’. Particularly good for couples. Usually in the mid-to-high price bracket.

The higher the spring count, the better the level of support. A mattress isn’t simply down to the number of springs, but also depends upon the thickness of the wire, the number of coils and the density of the springs.

Foam
All foams used in beds must be combustion modified to meet stringent fire safety regulations.
1. Polyurethane foams are the most common and versatile.
2. Latex is a premium quality material known for its distinctive resilient feel and durability. Latex foam - greener option. Latex bed comes with 20 years warranty
3. Viscoelastic or ‘memory’ foam is premium quality, high-density foam softens when introduced to body heat and moulds to the body’s natural sleeping position to give the optimum support.

Foam topped = Foam + springs

Futon Japanese invention consisting of a firm, unsprung sleeping surface made from layers of cotton wadding, which moulds itself to the shape of the sleeper.

Terminology –

Divan set (mattress & divan base) or a bedstead and complementary mattress.

Edge materials - Sturdy edge materials are a must. A mattress should give full support even on the edge. Makes sure that you don’t roll off a bed because the edge is weak. All good brands have this feature.

Fillings - Fillings provide a cushion between you and the springs. Natural fibers such as cotton and wool being more expensive and luxurious than polyester and other man-made fillings

Ticking - tightly woven external layer of fabric that keeps the fillings in their place.

Lumber support – Special support provided around lower back. Good for people with back problems.

Sizes
California King: 72" x 84" ( “ means inches)
King: 76" x 80"
Queen: 60" x 80"
Full ("double";): 53" x 75"
Twin: 38" x 75" - best for one child or adult.

Don't mind my asking - but since this has direct relation to the kind of mattress one needs - what is the age and weight of the person on these mattresses?
