Hi I was enthu potential immigrant to Canada till about 2 weeks when I saw ptm's post (thanx) about the australian job expos in different locations. I then started exploring immigration to Australia and now I feel that it is a better place in terms of

1. weather ( main advantage)
2. immigration timeline is only 1.5 to 2 yrs max on SIR visa it is only 6 months
3.Application is less expensive
4.There is no specified amount mentioned that needs to be shown as settlement funds

Am I right on these info? any opinions...

Anybody who has chosen to immigrate to Canada in the last 3 yrs can you tell me if you considered other countries and then chose Canada and also why?

Anybody chose Canada over Australia do tell me why??

Is it because of:

1. more publicity in the media
2. points system to qualify is difficult for Australian immigration
3.Proximity to US
4.Job opportunities?????
5.more people immigrating to Canada

Any other info anybody would like to share.....

P.S. I did search the site for this and also I wanted new immigrants , fresh from the immigration process to share their opinions.

Few years ago one of our friends did not get sufficient points for immigration to Canada. He tried for Australia and got immigration there. As compared to his friends in Canada he appears to be the most fortunate and happy. We always hear from him rosy pictures of Australia!

Daffodil,
yeah you started a good thread.
when i was in canada i stayed with a family as paying guest. The husband and his wife went to australia as student and stayed there for around two years then in vacations they came to india and due to some non compliance of some regulations regarding their study programme they were not allowed to enter in Australia.Later they went to canada as landed immigrants.
Since last four years the family is in canada and doing reasonably good ( gross family income around $70,000).
They were regularly discussing about time spend in Australia and lady was even used to say that after getting canadian citizenship they will move to Australia. basic reasons they cited were wonderful climate and better job prospects . they stated that for odd jobs in Australia one can expect around$15 to 20 as against $9 to 12 in canada.

Apart from proximity to US, there is no benefit to my knowledge.

Australia is much better - Climate, Opportunities, etc
I made a mistake and am stuck. I also had my brother file his Canadian PR and my brother and his family works in Vancouver in Software in a great company but somehow the happiness is missing in North American continent.

I haven't heard people in Australia/NZ complaining like people do here. Doesn't that tell the story?

Its all Media hype - reality is there is discrimination, racism, weather, tax and medical system. If you make a mark here, you are a genious - for average or above average, you are screwd and keep working like slaves for years and years in hope that situation will improve.

you are right . A friend of ours worked in a gas station in AUstralia and used to earn $ 15 per hour. Easy work at that. Most of the time he used to call his friends , sit and have a coke and handle customers even while talking. Wow.
THere are young students who earned a whopping amount driving taxis. THere anyone can drive taxi. In canada, there is a huge waiting list to pass a difficult exam and owning a taxi is out of reach for most ( licence itself is about $100 K plus ) .

I am not saying that everything is good in Australia but consider these

1. Good Climate

2. Professionals can settle in their field relatively easily

3. Public health care ( yes , australia and new zealand does offer free health care . It is not just canada )

4. Good pay rates for entry level jobs

5. You don't hear professionals in Australia complaining that they are working as general labour in factories

6. Citizenship in 2 years

A bilionaire exists almost in every country and hence its the people who make fortunes and country just has a subtle role in that and the difference created can easily overcome if one tries a little harder.

True nishitno1. However it makes sense to evaluate on all aspects and also to prepare well for adaptability to a foreign land making the settling process quicker, easier and a pleasure.

As far as Canada goes, We had decided that my hubby would do his MBA from either Ivey, Rotman, Schulich or Sauder and thereby create a much better chance of getting integrated with his intended career path in Canada. As a landed immigrant lots of benefits in terms of less course fee (not everywhere)student loans, kids schooling , spouse to work without any hassles( getting a job is a different story altogether).

As far as Australia goes the only top B School Melbourne Business School ranks 61 in the world and the fee structure is also pretty high with no rebates for a PR. But I think job opportunities are better with the current qual and work exp, will have to do some research on that. Anybody has any ideas let me know.

If somebody can share links of good forums, or anybody settled , it will be great.

If we were just a couple we would have gone ahead and taken the risk, but with 2 very small children we have to be very calculative . So now living in Abu Dhabi we are hoping to save up for a while before we take the plunge but with the current lifestyle and expenses that is also looking bleak. We will have to work something out.

My logic on reasons to immigrate is to
1. See the world after all \"its a small world\"
2. Live in a country which has cleaner systems incl evrything air, road, surroundings
3. Would like to give my children a \"global\" exposure ( My father took me all over India and I loved each and every trip, so I would like to show the world to my children)
4. Money - I dont think we can save too much money but enough to lead a good lifestyle abroad ( a house with all appliances and a car and an SUV)
plus build a base back home bcoz ultimately I think we will get back there)
Wow thats enuf of dreaming I guess.;)
