Recently I was talking to a 12 yr kid. He told me and I quote “I want to become a Nuro surgeon”. I asked the kid if he knew about the profession. He coolly said “I don’t know. My parents want me to be that”. I had observed that there was so much pressure put on that kid, I cant believe. Let kids be kids!
I know number of desis who have kids ranging from, 8-14. Lot of them have that infatuation to get their children to become a doctor or a lawyer (it used to be IT/Comp Science years back). There is nothing wrong in those professions, there is tonnes of money. Should the children decide when they are in high school what they want to do or is it the parents call? I know number of control freak parents who are adamant that their kids have to become one of two. When there are two kids, then one has to be a doctor and the other lawyer. What if the children resent the pressure from parents? Will they be kicked out of home by parents? Rat race? Social status?
There may be parents on this board who have that obsession. Please share your thoughts, if you can.

It is but natural in today's materialistic world, that parents yearn that their children aspire for the highest accomplishments in life.
There is a bit of psychology also involved. What we as parents cannot/ could not achieve in our life time, we want our children to achieve.
Take my son as an example. Our family being relatively new to Canada, he has now developed a remarkable ambition of studying>>
Robotics Engineering with applications related to harnessing Green Energy !!
So, you see, it's not only doctors or lawyers, but children should and must be encouraged to develop and use their expertise in all walks of life!!
