All,
I know there have been discussions before on this forum but would like to get current views/impressions of OCI versus PIO application.
I understand one can apply for OCI through VFS only and PIO at consulate only.
Also i heard on this forum, lot of folks are applying for OCI for adults below 50 yrs of age and PIO for their kids.
Is that still true? I would like to know the current situation with respect to PIO and OCI when your foreign passports get renewed.
Also it seems one has to give all original documents while applying for OCI or PIO. With OCI, one gets it back in 2 weeks whereas with PIO not sure though.
When one is applying in above case, OCI for adults only at VFS and PIO for kids only at Consulate and with originals required at both locations, how have folks managed this?
You can get PIO for kids first at the consulate. They will return the documents on the spot. Then you can go and apply at VFS for OCI but they will hold the documents for checking by the consulate for two weeks or whatever the case may be.
About endorsement of new passport numbers on PIO, you can clarify with the consulate as they have not mentioned anywhere that it needs to be done every time new passport is issued but there is a provision to do it though.

Thanks raj.
I have heard conflicting reports about PIO re registration on new foreign passport issuance. For OCI we know between 21-50 yrs of age , is not required.
Also on this forum, lot of folks took PIO for their kids and OCI for adults for non re registration of PIO on their kid's passport renewal.
But VFS says that one has to endorse the new passport no on PIO card which seems similar to the case of OCI re issuance for kids.
Trying to understand the difference in timelines and pain as cost wise it is the same.
Also, do minors have to get themselves registered with FRRO in India for stay more than 180 days on a PIO. OCI status does not require any registration for any length of stay.
PIO's timeline will be short as it is issued in Canada itself. OCI goes to India, so it takes 2-3 months or so.
PIO card holder has to register if staying more than 180 days, child or adult does not make any difference.
