Folks ,

I am wondering which bicycle to buy for summers .. My use would be occasional hence considering an inexpensive buy in the range of under 130 bucks .... choices are :

a. Canadian Tire Supercycle or similar ... regular MTB ... 18 gears or so ...

b. Cruiser : No gears ... standard looking .... Huffy from Zellers or similar ...

c. Hybrid : Somewhere b/w the two ..

My rides would be like 3 - 8 kms on driving trails .

I have never ridden gears ....

I feel that gears may be complicated and more prone to maintenance / break down vs the Cruiser ..... Advantages of using gears are unknown to me ....

Please advise .

Definitely go for the geared ones - there is hardly any additional maintainence, but it is needed when you are riding up a grade - you will often find those in biking trails, unless of course you would prefer to step down and walk it through.

The most common breakdown I have noticed in my Kids bike is the pedal arm losses it threads and wont stay - look for better quality in that area. Costco quality is usually good, but you need membership.

I don't know what you mean by Hybrid. Don't forget safety.

If you use occasionally, try to look at garage sales on Saturday. One of my friend bought it from Garage Sale in 50 bucks and bike was in excellent condition.

Try Kijiji, you should be able to pick up a decent one for under $100. I did that a few years ago

Buying second hand bike is a good option. However, if you can't perform simple repairs on a bike yourself, it may cost you a lot at the repair shop.

Folks - thank you for the suggestions ... Almost all stores CT / WM / Zellers carry bikes for around 100 bucks .... I shall look into these as well .
