That is the essence of life.
So many free things are there for you. You just have to take advantage of it.
Let me list the free things that I enjoy in life :
1. Visit to the beach and get cool air. No need to buy anything. if you need, when you start from home, get some peanuts / juice /coffee.
2. Go to shopping mall to enjoy the free AC/ Heater. See the things that is there. Enjoy all the free things that they offer you like the right to see demo's etc.. In the food court, just buy a coffee and sit down and relax. If there is some paid amusement for your children, yes, spend on that.
3. You need 5 shirts and 5 pants and the associated accessories (1 belt, one pair shoe, one pair sandels). Buy it when you get a deal. Resist the tempatation of buying cloths/ accessories at every visit to the shopping centres.
4. Donot shop for groceries at the high end shopping mall. Buy at your local grocery store. If you cook well, cook, take a packed snack / lunch to the shopping mall / outdoors and enjoy it, rather than eating from expensive joints which will increase the salt within you.
5. Enjoy the free time at parks, recreation centres, forests , hiking etc..
6. Invite friends over and see a movie. You cook for them. Next week replicate the same at their house. It will be so mind refreshing.
7. If you car is turning out to be costly, dump the car and take the public transit. I have a fixed insurance of rs. 8000 per year. My cost of coming to office in car is Rs 50 one way. Transit is Rs 7. So when I have more free time, I take the public transit.
8. Avoid buying more and more things for your house. Some people need to constantly dump furniture and buy new ones. Once you make an investment in furniture/ vessels, let it stay for 5 years. Avoid buying new ones in boxing day sales.
In the end, I agree that you donot need to be rich to be more happy (I put it this way). Of course, money is need. If you take advantage of all the free things that the world offers, you will save more which you can put into mutual funds or on your mortgage,

Not sure what is the kind of life in Canada these days but now a days in India, even friendship and family needs money. No one in the family (even your own spouse) will respect you if you donot have money.
Friendship these days is only give and take. You spend rs 100, your friend will spend Rs 100 for you. If you free load, they will chase you after a couple of weeks.

Just to give you an example, in Canada, one CD made friends with me. He invited me for a couple of more Cd's for lunch at a buffet hotel. After lunch he paid his share of lunch and asked us to pay our share.
Then he was friends with me so that he can use me as a driver (sure he paid Gas money but my time is more valuable than money).
This is just the typical attitude.

I agree with FP - lets not share personal info on the forum about anybody as the internet is fraught with risks which can be financial , reputational and even physical if someone wants to harm you. Hence the practice of using aliases and screen names.
