Hi,
Can people recommend where to buy a basic piano ?
Ontario Music Conservatory insists that the kid must practice on a proper piano and not a keyboard in order to qualify for tests .
88 weighed keys , 2 foot pedals , nothing very expensive or fancy - just need for kids to practice. Budgeting $300/- - $500/- .... not sure if it would have the same fate as my treadmill after 6 months
I checked on RFD threads which mentioned Yamaha keyboard (behaves like piano) (perhaps in Costco)

Even a basic piano tends to be pricey. We were fortunate to buy off of the previous home owners for $600 (the retiring couple had inherited from 30 years ago from another retired couple who have had that for another 30 or so years). Anyway, as RBO suggested, check online.
Music stores may have some inventory and you might get an inexpensive one. Once you buy, have a professional come in and tune it (usually costs about $100 for them to do things I don't understand).

Thanks All ,
I have looked at Kijiji and Costco and it appears that Casio's CDP 230 (399) or PX 150 (659) appear to be shortlisted ...
CDP 230 has single sustain pedal whereas PX 150 has 3 . Both are digital pianos (perhaps keyboards which behave like pianos .
CDP 230 : http://www.costco.ca/Casio%c2%ae-CDP230-Compact-Digital-Piano.product.100159272.html
PX 150 : http://www.costco.ca/Casio%c2%ae-Privia-PX-150-Digital-Piano.product.100033576.html
PX 130 which preceded PX 150 is hovering around $400/- on kijiji.
Thanks for the tuning tip D2K+1 ... I assume it may not be needed in digital pianos ... pls correct me if I am wrong.
Also - does anyone know if they go on sale on Costco ? Thanks in advance.

Fido.
CDP 230 was on sale at Costco last week for $10 cheaper.
Costco has the PX760 on sale this week for $599:

I recently read somewhere that the touch on a digital piano is much different than a regular one. Try and make a trip to Long and McQuade and get a feel of the digital ones before you invest in one.
You should also check with the instructor about getting a digital piano.

Hello Fido, Here is a little help for you to make your decision.
What the mechanical side of the piano does for its operation.

Comparison as to what piano you should buy. But not necessarily.... It also should suit your pockets.

Another comparison of their own two pianos and the newer innovations...

Local sellers promotions..:

In the better pianos, the mechanism recovers from the key's hammering for speeds unheard of. This feature is called Velocity Compunding and is a desirable feature which many of the cheap DIGITAL Pianos does not have. Plus the quality of sound that you are looking for is missing in a few.

Till yesterday, there were two or three vertical pianos were were offered for free. But the where abouts of the owners is unknown since it is winter months and so cannot validate their offers. But you will need a truck and a few burly adults to help you with the moving and a truck to transport the same to your place. That does not mean it is yours, it still has to get in through your front door or the rear, which ever will permit. Then, you have the cost of reconditioning the same plus the tuning of the instrument etc., will make it a great buy that is worth the efforts. But it is not for one who is in a hurry to have it right away, which is NOW.
We don't park a new car in our drive way each and every year. But this biuy will be well worth its weight in gold if the child picks up the music well and you enable them to learn and play the same earlier on in their lives. You never know who might join the ranks of the Beatles and the Barbaras with their unique abilities. Also it will let them grow into an instrument that is worth possessing. So, be generous in nature and if you can induce yourself to do the same, then it will not head to the same destination as your Treadmill made. Some of it we call it as a "Soda Bottle Enthusiasm", once the fizz is gone, it is just plain water.!!
So, go through this link and see if you also can make it, but all by your self but learning it by this method at home.

Current and the best Digital Pianos are far superior to the Upright ones with all kind of features built within and will have software that will let you play the CORRECT notes ONLY, as called for, till you master the system, It is a BREEZE and you and every body should learn to play it, does not matter how young or OLD you are.
Good Luck.
FH.
