HI all
We are a professional couple with a 4 year old moving to Charlottetown this July.
i would appreciate if you could provide me some information regarding the queries asked above, such as groceries, temples etc.
We are looking to rent one of the new apartments as we did not know whether renting a house would be in a safe neighbourhood or not. Planning somewhere near downtown/UPEI.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Also any challenges for a Canadian desi??

The University in PEI

2BR, LOOKS LIKE A GOOD DEAL. That complex could be loaded with a lot of students also. About two blocks from UPEI.

You can also check other Kijiji and Craigslist in Charlottetown. PEI
If you would like to move into a House, then spend a month in an apartment and do the search for a suitable location and nearness to work. Also see if parking is available at work.
JULY 2013 : Cavendish Beach Music Festival. If you missed this one, then wait for the next two in August
Philippine & South Asian Grocery: Will provide you with most of the fresh produce.
No Frills will supply you with all of the rest that you need there. Sobeys and Save easy are the next two that I know.

Taxis are cheap. Currently, $10 gets you from the Airport to downtown. 6-10$ will get you anywhere around town. All taxis are flat rate by zone. None has any specific licensing information in them; not to worry though, taxi drivers are typically friendly, enjoy meeting tourists, and are honest above all else. Charlottetown is a small highly accessible city, you can walk almost anywhere downtown.
PEI Public Education School Levels.:
Kindergarten (mandatory pre-school education; children who are at least 5 years of age, or will turn 5 by December 31st of the school year can be enrolled)
Elementary school (grades 1 - 6)
Intermediate school (also called 'junior high school', grades 7 - 9)
High school (grades 10 - 12)
Public education is free for all permanent residents in PEI, from kindergarten to grade 12. Colleges and universities do receive some public funds, but they are not free.
School Zoning
Which school your child attends is determined by where you live. Students attending the school zoned for their living area have transportation (school buses) to and from school. If your home is close to the school (walking distance), your child may not be assigned a school bus.
The following is required at registration:
Proof of child's age -- a birth certificate or passport
Proof of address -- apartment lease or rental agreement with your name and address
Proof of child's immigration status -- Record of Landing document or confirmation of permanent residence
Immunization record -- proof that your child has been immunized in the country of origin
Records of previous education or past transcripts -- to help place your child in appropriate grade level
Sorry to inform you that there are No Hindu Temples nor Indian Restaurants there in PEI. You might hit some curry dishes in a few bars and Oriental restaurants. Turmeric and red chilies do not make a curry. If it is vegetarian, then forget it. You are plum out of luck.
There is a group that plays Cricket there. If you like to play then locate them after arrival there.
If you golf, then enjoy it there. lot of Golf Courses, but scattered all over.
The water is just under 60 degrees, if you want to hit the beaches. You do get the salty sea breeze if that is what you want. The warm and hot days are only a few and so enjoy the sand and the sun as soon as you land.
Any challenges, yes, finding suitable company for Chess and Bridge. Who knows you might find them sooner than you think. If you do not like sea food then get out of there. But SPUDS are available in plenty.

With Cellular and Mobile systems, the technology and equipment is developing so fast and moving upwards unpredictably, and what you buy today is obsolete tomorrow. So, buy something that is slightly expensive and hang on to it for atleast a couple of years. A few might throw it in if you go for a longer term.
Having said that, you will find that BELL and ROGERS are there and they are two top contenders, who are built, just to make tons of money for their share holders and forget about their subscribers. And the executives there take a back seat and watch. So I always root for the underdogs. ( They are good paymasters if you are working for them.)
Looking for a good underdog to cheer is FIDO. The plans that you might like is their $39 one. But you will have to shell out for the equipment. They might give it to you at a lower price, if you lock into their TWO Year plan. So there is a cost. But you will be the envy of the town.
Alternately, if you want to save a few bucks, which will not hurt you, go for the plain vanilla and under 20 scheme. The choice is yours.
For internet, I would go with the cable, just because of the speeds that they put out, unless Bell has FIBE at your location. I have to inform you that some buildings are PERSONAL TERRITORY of some of the telecommunication giants and they are built into their walls and except for a wireless system, there is no entry for competitors. So, be guided by their edict. Talk to the SUPER of the building.
