A spellbinding evening of music for the tabla of North India
with Pandit Sharda Sahai and friends.
On Saturday, August 5, at 7:00pm at Pollack Hall (Schulich School of Music of McGill University, Montreal, Qc), the legendary virtuoso, Pandit Sharda Sahai, will perform a traditional tabla solo in the inimitable style of the Benares gharana. This performance will be a unique occasion for Montrealers to hear a tabla artist with unmatched mastery of the rare art of the tabla solo. The concert will open with performances by Bob Becker and Shawn Mativetsky, accompanied by the McGill Percussion Ensemble.

Pandit Sharda Sahai was born in Benares, India in 1935. He is a direct descendent of Pandit Ram Sahai, the founder of the Benares style of tabla playing. As one of India's pre-eminent tabla artists, Sharda Sahai has appeared at all of the important music conferences and festivals and has performed with every major artist of North Indian Classical music, including Ali Akbar Khan, Amjad Ali Khan, and Ravi Shankar. He is the director of the Pandit Ram Sahai Sangit Vidyalaya schools of music in Benares and in London. He has held appointments at the music faculties of Wesleyan University, Brown University, Berklee School of Music, Dartington College of Arts, Oxford University and at Leeds University in England. The tradition lives through Sharda Sahai.
