Hi,
I am currently living in london and working for CAMELOT the UK national lottery organisation as Senior software tester with over 5 years experience. I am thnking about moving to canada toronto. However can anyone help with the following:
1. I am flying out to Canda Toronto on 6th Nov 2007 to look around for a week and enquire about IT positions, any tips?
2. What is the IT testing market like?
3. Whilst working as a software tester I have covered system, intergration, e2e and user acceptance testing are these recognised in Canada?
4. I am ISEB qualified is this recognised in Canada? I also have a BSC Hons in Business Information Systems will this be recognised.
I would really appreciate if someone could help me in some way. I also have an uptodate to REsume that i can provide....
Many Thanks..
I look forward to hearing from anyone......
Here are my thoughts, for what it's worth....
Trying to land a job in one week will be pretty tough. Try to contact some recruiters before hand to set up as many interviews as you can. Look at workopolis, monster etc to get an idea of the bigger recruiters in IT. Some of them are CNC Global, Quantum, SI Systems. Looking at the recruiter web sites will also give you an idea of the salary range you can expect.
Most jobs require more than one round of interviews. If at all possible, try to get one round done telephonically and say you'll be available for the next round face to face. Keep in mind that the hiring companies will also need some time to sift through all their candidates from the first round.
November is the end of the calendar year, and hiring slows down at that point. Coming early next year might be better. However, be prepared for the intense cold!
The Canadian job market is pretty small. As such employers are in a position to demand all sorts of skills, and they frequently do. So a company may ask for all skills from A-Z but once you're in the job you will see that the specific skillset
required is quite small.
You seem to have a good range of testing skills - in terms of the types of testing done. Smaller companies may try to land you because of your breadth, but they may not be able to give you enough exposure once you're there. This is a tough call, and you have to decide the type of company to choose, as it will affect your forward path.
Not sure about the ISEB qualification.
Don't be discouraged if the initial steps here are hard. I assume you have done your homework and have your reasons as to why you'd like to relocate here.
Good luck!
