Hi ,
I just received my Immigration to Canada 3 months back.Iam in US from the last 4 years & I have my GC in process but I some how feel that Canada is a better place to settle down .
I work in QA/Testing area & I just wanted to know the job situation in Canada for my feild.I have looked on workopolis & monster.
I know that there are many local people available, but can Is it possible for getting an telephonic interview & get an offer before landing in Canada ( I know, Iam asking too much but just wanna know that are telephonic interviews a practice in Canadian IT Industries ?? )
Let me know if some one is working in this area or has any information
Thanks
Sandeep
The IT industry in Canada sucks. All the major companies here are from US (Motorola, IBM..) The rest of the Canadian IT companies are not doing that good either (Nortel, RIM..) The big consulting companies got branches in US too, so whoever lost the jobs in US gets transferred to Canadian branches. (Ajilon Consulting)
In my opinion the recruiters here won't call you to US for telephone interviews. For that matter, some recruiters here won't even call 905/289 area code phone numbers, as long distance charges apply. (Toronto area code is 416/647 and suburbs numbers 905/289 which covers till Niagara)
If you mail the recruiter, they won't reply.
If you call the recruiter, most of the time it goes to the answering machine.
If you visit the recruiter's office personally, the receptionist won't allow you to talk to the recruiter directly, b'cos you need an appoinment.
If you send a mail for a job from Workopolis or any jobs site, you won't even get a reply from the recruiters. As everybody applies for the job regardless of their experience and qualification. They just swamp the recruiter's inbox. One recruiter said he receives 200 mails a day, he says he doesn't have time to look at each one of them.
Every new immigrant who comes to Canada, targets Toronto as their final destination and to get a job quickly some people will change/dupe their resumes. I know a friend who keeps 4 resumes at hand (SAP, PeopleSoft, Java, DataWarehousing)
Canada needs people to support it's day to day activities (general labor, welding workers, construction workers, security guards, truck drivers....), not IT folks.
Whoever came to Canada during the IT boom time are well settled. One thing I heard from lot of folks here "If you get a job, you won't loose it that easily. If you lost the job, then you won't get another so soon"
One thing I like about Canada is the lifestyle it's lot better than US. Especially in Toronto you won't miss India. So many desi stores, restaurants and events.
It's sad that IT people from US use Canada PR as their backup copy to US. I am no exception. People who lost jobs in US or who ran out of their H1B time or ....
Suggestion:
If you have any friends who are already working here then try to send the resume via them.
or
If you are working for big consulting company in US who got branches in Canada, ask for a transfer US to Canada.
Hello ,
Thanks for the reply.I will look out in the way you have suggested me'
Thanks
Sandeep
