I want to send my children (9 and 4 years) for some kind of martial arts training. I was wondering which form (karate/kung fu/tai kwando/?) parents recommend and whether anyone knows of any good programs in Mississauga.

You Can send them to Karate Training. My Kids go to International shotokan Karate . It is on West Mall, Mississauga.
You can google to find adddress. This coaching centre is quite good.

Karate, etc are like Bharat Natyam dance here. Kids learn the karate/etc moves but cannot apply.
The whole point is to improve their self-confidence.
So, put your kids to Judo where kids learn and apply at the same time. This makes it more involved as you practice with partners. Also, there are kind of mock fights with other kids. Since, Judo is purely defensive unlike karate, jiu jitsu, kung fu, etc - chances of getting hurt is minimum (compared to others). Also, you kid will be competing in numerous tournaments that takes place regularly.

Thank you for your suggestions Jai Ho. I have enrolled the older one in an after school Tai Kwan Do program and she seems to be enjoying it. I believe it too is focussed on defence. I had an opportunity to attend a belt grading event and was happy with what I saw.

Karate, Judo, Kung Fu in N. America are treated more as a sport rather than a defence art.

Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu (also known as Ninjitsu) is one of the oldest schools of martial arts and is meant to teach people how to defend themselves. No rules, no BS, just action :)

If anybody is interested please PM me. Classes held in Mississauga every Tuesday and Thursday night between 8 PM - 9:30 PM. The instructor is very good and well qualified.
