I have a gas stove. When my house was being built, I got the builder to install a gas line (for which I paid extra !!). I got a Maytag from Sears. Been using it for about 7 years now, and am happy with it. Paid around $1100 at that time. Few things that I kept in mind while shopping:

1. Location of the knobs
2. Size of the burner

Other than that other features were standard on most units.

I had to replace my range hood since the one that the builder provided was a cheap quality and very noise. So we hardly used it, which resulted in our smoke alarm being set off everytime we cooked.

With a gas stove, you'd need a good range hood and ensure that you have a Carbon Monoxide detector on the same floor.

The one good thing about the pricing at Sears was that, the salesman gave us the best price within the 3-4 week period. So if the stove was on sale 2 weeks prior to our purchase or was to come on sale 2 weeks after our purchase (which tey know beforehand), he gave us the sale price.

Hope that helps....happy cooking :)
