Dear friends,

I wish to check on two things. 1) What household items should one ship to Canada while migrating? I have been advised to send electronic items such as LCD, music system and kitchenware, crockery etc. and omit furniture and other bulky items. Kindly advise.

2) In relation to the above what is the expense of shipping these items from Dubai ? Is it on container basis or weight basis ? I will really appreciate if you could send me some links of shipping agencies from Dubai who are relaible and cheap.

Hi There,

The best option would be to identify someone migrating around the same time. Bring in whatever u can since there is no customs duty on it. Also, ensure that all electronic items work in 110V too.Cause, whatever u buy here attracts 13% tax.When I moved in 2004, I was lucky to find someone moving in from Dubai having just 10 Cu Ft of stuff. I added another 10 cu ft of mine and we took a 20' container. The total cost I paid worked out to around $ 1500 incl insurance, freight and delivered at home! It would be painful to spend the savings on items which, we would have had in UAE, sold it for a loss and come here to find it a necessity and costing much more.

there are so many shipping companies who offer competitive freight charges like sharaf shipping, united arab shipping company, orient shipping etc Please call them and ask for their export department and talk to marketing executives and you will get all the help you need.

I also checked with shipping company just to bring 42" LCD TV and few items jsut 100 kgs. freight charges were coming dhs 4800/- so I sold TV for dhs 1800 and carried rest of the items with me. It is expensive affair.
