I have been reading lot of mails and it looks that arranging for household items purchasing in canada is a costly affair.I will be immigrating in next month to Toronto.

Have you people ever tried to find out how much will it cost by shifting luggaue like computer/furniture/music system/etc from India.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

Hi
Forget it pal.
The electricity system is 110 V here and the sockets have rectangular holes, not cirecular in India. So electrical gadgets from India are not going to work. You can buy convertors but they are very expensive.
"arranging for household items purchasing " is NOT expensive.
You can get tonnes of stuff in very good quality at cheap stores as well as in shops selling second hand stuff plus at garage / lawn sales or moving sales.
Yo need to concentrate first on securing a job , all the rest will follow.

Yes, don't worry about furniture - it is not that expensive here.

For example you can get computer table at about $25 in garage sell or brand new from Walmart at about $60.

You can get many stuff in the Garage Sale (Is a sale by home owner for disposing of un-used but good quality stuff, throwing a garbage is also costly affair here!!)

First concentrate on jobs. If you really wants to bring something - it can be only furniture - never think about electricals and electronic stuff.

Yes, if you land here during the summer time, you can get everything from garage sale. new Computers are also cheap here. If you have some room, you may bring some new stainless steel utensils. Usually, we use glass or corning ware dishes and bowls. Steel utensils found at the indian stores is not that good.

Just bring enough money and clothes which can last for a few months and that should set you up.

That way things are very easy here. Nothing to worry.
Just get here and start working at the earliest possible.

Is it worth bringing utensils from India by paying extra baggage of Rs 4300 for 30 kg(apart from 62 kg/2 piece baggage allowance) in Air India.

What all utensils can one bring from India? Pressure cooker, kadahi, tawa?

I think the question should not be whether to bring things from India or not - the question should be what is the value of things that one wants to bring from there and how much will be the freight charges.

I for one brought one full container and paid about a total of US$ 7,000 - but the things I brought were almost worth more than C$40,000 - and if I had to buy them here, they would have not not costed me anything less than 65-70 k. And mind you, it was not only exclusive furniture, and household utensils and electronics, but also sentimental things like my family videos, family photographs, favourite books, tons of clothes which I did not want to throw away etc etc.

That thing also helped me another manner....I was well settled in my new apartment within the first two weeks and people who visited us could not imagine that we had not been living here for a couple of years atleast!

and by the way........all my electronics work here....because things like VCRs, Amplifiers, cassette decks, dvd players bought in asia all have dual voltage settings. I only did not bring my 29 inches TV....and I repent because I had to buy one here (a multi system) for $1500! I ned a multi system to be able to see my family videos recorded on PAL system.

Everyone has priorities - depends what are yours, and that shoud drive your decision whether or not to bring things from there. Recently a young couple friend migrated here from New York - they have brought only 4 suitcases.......sold or gave off everything in USA!
