hi u all,
I have just joined your community...pretty cool.
let me introduce myself- i m a 26 yr old girl. I m working as a voice dubbing artiste & been singing jingles & songs here in mumbai since i was six years old!done a bit of radio work too. I am keen on moving to canada( temporary, just to gain experience..or even permanently, if things go that way!).. for better prospects but am in loss coz i dont know anyone out there personally, so i was hoping the best ones to turn to would be u guys, since u all have the hands on experience of living there.
finding jobs on the internet has been a very tiring experience since not many websites list vacancies in my field of expertise. i.e voicing , animation dubs, radio jockeying( i tried emailing some Indian radio stations in canada too, but no reply!)
it d be wonderful if u could guide me along, i ve got my CV & my demo(for RJ) ready..if only i could send it to the right people....u know an Indian Radio or TV station!
I would also be grateful if you could give me info on any"earn while you learn" kinda programs...like "training in broadcasting & working alongside" if there are any?
meanwhile I shall continue my search from India...
awaiting a positive reply, crossing my fingers!
Thanx ..
Prachi

Welcome Prachi!
You are a special person here. So only special persons can only answer your queries......
I am a technical person and does not have anything to do with radio, except listening it
Apart from joke, there are many desi radio stations in toronto. Most of them are disappointing - not at all quality programs. Infact some are so garbage that .. I can't write much on that.
These radio programs are done by few members of some families and it is really looking like family business. Same person is a host, advertiser, news reader and oh man, what a horrible sound they make. Not at all happy with it Now you get the reason why you are not getting any responses from them.
On TV side there is one channle OMNI.2 that gives lot of exposure to south asian community and so having few good indian programs. CBC is also good channel that has singnificat people from south asia as their staff. They also have radio station.
You have such a nice experience you should not have any problem getting jobs - however one IMPORTANT thing - ASCENT - you have to have this YANKEE accent... Second thing is you have to prepare your Resume (don't call it CV) in canadian style.
I don't know anybody personally but here are few names that you can consider:
Ingreed Ramprasad (Host of Hot Like Pepper radio)
Indira Harrish Naidu (Reader of South Asian News on OMNI.2)
Sahota Family (TV Programs)
Rashmi Anand (Radio Des Pardes)
Arifa Muzzafer (Radio Saz-o-awaz)
....
You also try this website http://www.ygnet.org the owner of that site is webmaster at CBC's website and might have contacts.
Best of Luck!!

Thanx garvo gujrati! it was encouraging to get a welcome & a response to my message. I do realise that my profession is not something many people would know about since most websites also dont post any jobs related to it, most recruiting out here also happens through contacts or on how famous your work is.
Thanx for the piece of advise & I am checking out the URL u mentioned.
As for the radio business in Canada, if its like u say it is ..then phew! i have a lot of work to do , it isnt going to be easy .... lets hope someday ( with a lot of blessings & help from a lot of indians out there) we ll be able to set up an absolute professional INDIAN radio/tv station there!
The Indian population is large there right?
Till then I'll keep searching...
Thanx again...
best regards,
Prachi

Dear Prachi,
By this discussion I feel that u should get some cassetes made in India and bring them to Canada. Sell them to Punjabi's and other Indians. Being a punjabi, I can assure you that you can reexport your cassettes back to Punjab also..
by the way...... the song....
""Dil Lai gayeee kuri Gujrat deee"" .... is also very famous in Punjab...
