I just read this article in another forum.
And I have been trying for a month now to get something in USA....doesnt look good.
It was inevitable.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
Something most of us know, but a little scary for those of us in this field.
It seems inevitable that will spill over into the Canadian job market as well.

But here is what one of my friends in US did. Might work here in the long run.
He was a hardcore programmer (C++ mainly). He worked mainly on govt projects and also in telecom line. One would think that those were totally safe areas. But it wasnt. But he was ok, they didnt lay him off. But he knew the day was not far.
He was already doing his masters part time in telecommunications (currently enrolled in PhD). Once he completed that he started looking for consulting Jobs which had more of a Sales and training profile. Now he is with IBM just in Technical Sales and post sales training etc...no programming at all. His clients are again govt agencies whose work cannot be outsourced (DOD). As per him, He sells what they call technologies...e.g. if an agency had all their code written in another language, he goes and touts how great it would be to change to C++ and OO Design and related tools. And there seem to be many such places.
I am not sure what the situation is in Canada AFA govt agencies.
Moral of the story change to a more non-programming profile.
Go for Management roles (team leads etc)....If possible.
