THE HONOURABLE JUDY SGRO, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Citizenship and Immigration
Today, December 12, 2003, Prime Minister Paul Martin announced the appointment of the Honourable Judy Sgro as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. Ms. Sgro is the Member of Parliament for York West.
Judy Sgro was elected to the House of Commons for the riding of York West in a by-election on November 15, 1999, and re-elected in November 2000.
In January 2003, she was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services. She is also Chair of the Prime Minister's Caucus Task Force on Urban Issues and a member of the Standing Committee on Health.
Since her election, she has served as a member on the standing committees on Justice and Human Rights, Human Resources Development, Public Accounts and the Sub-committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities. She chairs the GTA Sub-committee of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization project and was a member of the 2008 Federal Olympic Bid.
In 1994, Ms. Sgro was elected to Metropolitan Toronto Council as a Regional Councillor. She initiated Canada's first "John school" to combat street prostitution, a model across Canada and the United States. She served on the North York City Council from 1987 to 1994 where she chaired the Mayor's Task Force on Drugs as well as the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee.
In 1998, she served as Vice-Chair of the Toronto Police Services Board, working to preserve the integrity of the Toronto Police Service.
Involved in many community affairs, she was President of the Cancer Society. She also sits on the Board of Governors for Villa Colombo.
Ms. Sgro was born in Moncton, New Brunswick. She is married and the mother of three children.
