Government eases ID card requirementWebPosted Dec 18 2003 03:16 PM PST
OTTAWA - The federal government now says permanent residents will be allowed back into Canada after Dec. 31 without a new identification card. However, they will have to produce proof they're permanent residents. Permanent residents had been told they might be stranded if they travelled outside Canada after Dec. 31 without the new identification card. With time running out, thousands still don't have one. And that has triggered long line-ups at Immigration offices. Immigration Minister Judy Sgro says people arriving in Canada will still be asked for the permanent resident cards, but won't be denied entry if they don't have one. \"But what you'll have to do is to provide proof to the Customs officer that you are a permanent resident of Canada. \"Hence the importance of having a driver's licence with you, and other documentation that shows you are a permanent resident of Canada.\" says the new minister. More than 850,000 cards have already been issued. Nut more than 700,000 people who need the cards – which take more than a month to get – still don't have one. The ministry also says airlines won't face fines if they carry permanent residents who don't have cards back to Canada.

This PR card system is a bogus system - they want to suck more money out of poor immigrants for no fault of theirs.
