's this a matter of 'grapes are sour'?'

:p
Not really , I have not given US a thought as to when I reach Canada (though I admit it s smwhere at the back of mind ).

I might be wrong but one of my major reason for emigrating was to seek identity in the new country (may be 10 - 15 years later) & not live like a 2nd grade citizen. I think Canada shd provide this but I m still 2 experience it personally . I have seen Indians returning back from the States coz they felt aliens however well knit they were as a community . Though as u have said I shd visit and see for myself.

And I have felt that a lot of H1B holders have come 2 Canada (maybe for a PR though) - Personally I wud prefer 15-20% less wages if I get independence and freedom in the society ........ I also feel that Canadians are more polite and friendly than Americans .

Charlie,

I got ur point , but pray tell me is the condn of neo Canadian Immigrants similar 2 American blacks or different ??

JRF,

Your situation sounds like what I was in 5 years ago. I made same arguments after living in US for 10 years, as you wrote, to convince myself that moving to Canada will be right move. Our arguments are based on assumption that the standard of living, lifestyle, work environment, your value will be somewhat similar in both places.

And after living in Canada for 5 years, I realized those assumptions were the fallacy and weaknesses that made my arguments in favor of Canada irrelevant in the larger picture.

This is my advise. If your GC is in process, stick it out. I understand your desire for freedom, but you will be whole lot "FREE" after waiting another 3-4 years for GC instead of moving to Canada and waiting another 3-4 years for citizenship so that you can join the same grind again in US. :-(

Get Canadian PR to keep it as insurance if you feel that you will be worse off moving back to India if something goes wrong with your US GC process.

Thogh I find you've written it more jovially, I feel it is the reality.
I've been living in US for more than 7 years with No Green Card now I pretty much want to tatse the freedom of being a PR and have a settled mind that \\\"This is the place where I am gonna set my home\\\" instead of worrying \\\"Oh, if I lose this Job, I may need to pack my Bag\\\".

May be worth noting here that these opinions vary greatly on perspective. I lived for about 6 yrs. in the states and moved once my h1 expired, and certainly at that point in time, one of the thoughts was to move back after the one year period whereby I could renew my h-1 for another 6 years.

It'll be 6 years in Canada in a couple of months time, I'm already a citizen with plenty of opportunity to work in the states if I wanted to. I however prefer Canada to the states. Why? Because overall I feel the quality of my life is better here. And that's not only because I have a "good job", I had that in the states as well. Its a combination of a whole lot of factors that may or may not apply to others. But FYI, I know a lot of desi Canadian citizens who feel the same way I do. Some of them are from India, but some are from the U.S. who moved to escape the uncertainty you speak of. One couple even had their greencard being processed while they were here and actually got it approved, but decided to give it up stay back in Canada because they found that their life here was better than that in the states.

The notion that job and money are the only factors that contribute to someone's decision is myopic at best and I'd use the same adjective for people who move for nothing else. Rather than trying to figure out which country's best for everyone (no country is), it may be smarter to evaluate your criteria for moving and decide what works best for you.

BTW, who are "Britishers"? Indianer eh? ;-)

FYI, There is no word "britishers" People who are citizen of Britain are called British.

My dear ignorant ignoramus Canada-hating US-loving friend.

Britisher is a word. Dictionary.com, defines it as

"A native or inhabitant of Great Britain"

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Britishers

So a plural (i.e. many people) of Britisher is Britishers.

Better do YOUR research before posting such replies

JRF -

I agree with BL wholeheartedly ... everyone's experiences, circumstances and opinions vary. Like him, my opinions are based on my experiences and people around me. In the end, listen to everyone, but do what you think is right.

Just to give you my background. I came to Canada initially with the same mindset as BL and like him staying in Canada for 5 years now. I haven't left yet. ;-)

The common traits between me and people based on whose experience, I formed opinions, are that:

1. We went to school in US,
2. Never worked in India,
3. Came to US in late teens/early 20s,
4. Single
5. Traveled extensively worldwide.

Even being quite successful professionally in Canada, most of us have the opinion that in the long term we are better off in US.

If you have any specific question, PM me. I may not be quick with my reply for next 6-8 weeks as I am traveling on business.

I think a common deciding factor for all individuals can be to look into the future .... 10 years hence , estimate where they wud be at that time and match it with their long term aspirations .

for eg if sm1 wishes 2 b on top of the Technology ladder , US /India is just the right place ........... for sm1 who wishes 2 live in a civilised , educated , balanced society as an equal Canada may not be a bad place............... for sm1 who wishes for scenery & nature Vancouver may be the place ....(West Van is occupied by some richest people who wish 2 do just that ).......................

Gernerally for most of us .........a combination of factors works best ........ so mix and match and then decide which place best serves ur long term objectives ............. definitely nothing is certain but that shd nt be a deterrant from making a road map.

Manasvi.
