I am planning to travel to us with my kids but without my spouse. Do I need to take a consent letter from spouse to take kids with me.

In case I need who can issue/authoroze this kind of letter.

I used to work for continental airlines back in germany(flying cologne to newark)...and when a single parent is flying with her/his kid we used to ask for a consent letter which normally used to be a normal handwritten/typed from the other parent....
I am not sure if someone else would authorise that letter....
