Hi All,
I know its a silly questions.......but for some of parents its a very big question. My son is studying in Grade 1 and everyday we have problem what to cook for him.
He is asking for always Pizza, Bread and butter only. but we are not providing always what he asked for. as we are vegetarian so we are giving Chappati, subji, etc... but end of the day most of the time we finding lunch is as same condition he didn't touch the food even.
What you guys are preparing everyday for kids, if any idea will help us
Our menu are as under:
chappati and Subji,
Noodles,
Bread and butter;
Bagels and Juice
Pan Cake
Fried Rice
If any one have some more items to add in menu please share your ideas which can help a lot to other parents.
Thanks and Take care....
Disclaimer: I dont have kids
However I do remember what it is like to be a kid growing up here and I think your son wants to fit in with the other kids.
Pizza or sandwiches are good. Rather than just bread/butter, maybe Peanut butter and jam (do they allow P Butter in schools nowadays?) or lettuce and cheese? Grilled cheese with veggies like mushrooms and green/red/yellow peppers.
I think sandwiches are staples but you can give him variety by buying different types of breads (think rye, whole grains, multigrains, pumpernickle cheese bread, white bread etc) whatever he likes and also vary the cheese. Swiss, cheddar, marble, etc.
add maybe an apple or some crackers and a juice box.
Also one more thing: if he is not eating the food you are sending him to school with every day - can u sit down and ask him why he does not eat it? just ask him how he feels and see if that will give you some insight. He may be feeling 'different' and doesnt want to hurt your feelings.

Mumbai Maazi Ladki ...
Having grown up outside India, I found that it was not always easy for me to open my lunch container and start eating my roti and sabji with my school mates so my mother would 'westernize' the food:
1. Roti and sabji was converted into Frankie or Burrito.
2. Home made Pizza using multigrain flour and sabjis.
3. Instead of just plain sandwiches (we didn't have peanut butter where i grew up) my mom would make sandwiches of left over sabji and add cheese and ketchup-gobi was great for this. She'd cut them into bite size pieces so they looked a lot like finger sandwiches or she'd grill them in the sandwich maker
4. Rice was never a problem or noodles (mmm, I love Maggi)
Idea is to get creative with the food and I'm sure your child will enjoy eating it without you having to compromise on quality/health.
Hope this helps!
Hi, I use a lot of Frankies for my kids (5 yrs). They like it with lettuce and raw veggies (with sandwich spread in it.) You can add paneer, mushrooms all dry subji's in it. Seal the frankie with cheese in the corners, apply cheese on rolled roti corners and microwave for 5 seconds, the subji will never spill from frankie.
Hope this helps.

Rbo,
In the absence of adult helping, it is better to feed what your child likes, rather than him/her starving.
If you prefer to give your child meat (while you yourself will not touch it), you can buy a Burger / Pizza and pack it in your child's lunch.
On the other hand, if you prefer to give only vegetarian items, here are some ideas (the main theme is to make it more western and when he/she eats in school, the child will not be ashamed to eat Indian food while all the child's classmates eat western food) :
1. In a Burger bun, fill in Vegetarian burger and top it off with cheese and plain youghurt which serves as equal as mayonese.
2. You can give vegetable cutlets which looks looks on the outside as burger (to the child's western classmates)
3. Try to make some nice gujarathi Rotli's done with Ghee and may be stuffed. Kids at a young age hate to mix roti and subji by themselves at school.
4. Kids love Macroni and Cheese which is vegetarian for sure.
5. There are a number of south Indian items that you can make easily at home which kids will love as well as they will not make a mess when eating like Idli's, Paniyaram, Appam, Vivikam etc.. Also there are a lot of delicious Gujarathi items that can be made. The key is to make it sweet to entice them to eat them.
If the above does not work out, you should try to feed the child nicely on weekends and after/before school hours and be content with your child eating snacks/Health finger foods/ fruits/ juice during school hours.
Hope this helps.
Peace by TK

Yesterday both we sit together and ask him what he likes to be in lunch. He given us his basic ideas and we try to explain him that everyday Junk food is not good for health and is not healty to eat a lot.
now We make a menu for everyday what will be in lunch from Monday to friday
we decided to give heavy breakfast in morning time with milk....like cereals etc...........so if not eating proprely in lunch time at least will help.
Wait and watch how much will help us??
Anyway anybody have been asking questions to their kids what they are doing in lunch hrs?
One thing we noticed when we asked my son than he replied "you know when we have a lunch hrs. all the kids want to finished their lunch as fast as possible so they have more time to play outside or inside."
