Hi All,
We are group of 4 peoples, coming to Vancouver by next month.
Our office is at Howe St, it would be really helpful if you all can provide some information about the following
1- I have heard that spices are costly there at Vancouver, What esle should we bring along with us to Vancouver?
2- Please suggest some good accommodation for initial 4-5 days and also some affordable apartments.
3- Where is the nearest place where people belonging to Indian community lives?
4- What is tax deduction there, we have to stay there for around 6 month.
Thanks in advance,
Rohit
1. Spices are not expensive in Vancouver. Yes, if you convert in Indian Rs. everything is expensive here except gas (petrol).
2. Ask you company to arrange for accomodation. Stay away from hotels (which may come up in google search) at East Hasting area.
Check craigslist.ca or vancouversun.com or vancouver courier or Burnaby Newsleader for apartments (Should ask them whether they will give you for 6 months lease, as some may not want to give for less than 1 years). You should try to live near skytrain station, so that you can go to your office by skytrain (assuming you won't have car). Look at translink.bc.ca for transit information.
3. Indian people are everywhere (more on Main/Fraser Street in Vancouver and Surrey). Instead of looking for Indian people, you should look for your conveniece (again try to live near skytrain station).
4. Search this website you will get links to calculate taxes.

Since you work on Howe St, I would even suggest looking for an apartment in the Westend neighbourhood downtown. Check craigslist. That's the best as the person above said. Cheers.
Thnx Ash20 and Vanina for your prompt replies.

For a small one-bed you pay approximately $900 - 1200 in the downtown neighbourhood. You would save time and money on transport if you lived downtown.
There are plenty of grocery stores too. Most of them also stock indian spices and indian grocery. For the speciality items you would have to go to India town in Main street or in Fraser.
here's a link http://www.virtualvancouver.com/indiatown.html
Thanks a lot for your replies,
Is there paying guest accommodation available in Vancouver, what is the avg cost for paying guest???
I would not mind traveling 20-30 minutes daily.
Rohit
