I am looking for an used car (Toyota Corolla) and went to a used car dealer to see some cars.

Test drove a 2001 Toyota Corolla CE (automatic) with following details:
- Milage of 136,000 KM
- Carfax report provided by the dealer did NOT have the number of previous owners and the dealer could not explain why.
- Windscreen not original Toyota (replaced with some other make)
- Radio not working and radio antenae stuck
- Fog light place holder missing (from front bumper)
- Price:

400 (administration fees) +
350 (Emission tests, etc.) +

I am not sure what to make of this price for this used car (am new driver) and hence request your comments/ opinion.

could be a lemon. pls. double check it.
my estimate would be : $ 5000 base price.
it is a 8 year old car and will be due for repairs soon.

Instead of CARFAX, ask for CARPROOF report. CARFAX is a US based company and does not show the complete vehicle history, unlike CARPROOF.

You can also ask the dealer for a used vehicle package which shows the history of ownership. This document can be obtained from any licensing center for $20 by submitting the VIN number

Finally, an on-road price of $8200 for the vehicle as you describe it is on the higher side. Try looking into private sellers on sites like kijiji, craigslist and autotrader.

It seems to be high compared to what I bought ,Mine is 2004 with mileage at 77000 KM the price was total of 11,500(bought from hyundai dealer in toronto).
I think as TK says it should total to 5000 to 6000.

Last week i went to a local dealer for 2005 accord. CARPROOF report shows two insurance claims. I verified CARFAX and it has no claim history. So looks like in Canada better check both.
