I realised that we immigrants settle for less in our career (college v/s university in this example), as we focus on settling down and getting a firm hold here.

Sometimes its about being realistic and not about settling for less.

A foreign trained doctor who couldn't get a residency spot in Canada should face the inevitable and shift focus to other areas in the health field.

I am a white person working for a large publicly traded company and the manager who hired me is Canadian born of Indian descent while the boss above her is an Indian immigrant. I don't see any discrimination in the way they hire which is wonderful.

I will always be grateful to an Indian professor many years ago who helped me get an internship when I could not find one. She set up an interview with some people she knew and they gave me an internship helping with their Indian theatre company. This is where I developed an interest in Indian culture and in the experience of more recent non-European immigrants. Thanks to my internship I had work experience and found subsequnet jobs, it really opened doors for me. I remain friends with my former professor and her family and will repay her kindness however I can. I always look out for opportunities to help others because I understand well how difficult it is for those without connectons.

For the original poster - please be careful many private colleges are a scam and I think they often prey on newcomers as well as less educated long-time Canadians who cannot discern that they are not offering a quality education. I know Everest College has been sued multiple times although I cannot find the article I am seraching for from a few years ago where one Ontarian successfully sued for inadequate education (they did not give what they advertised).

George Brown, Humber and others are publicly funded but they are not directly run by the government. Their credentials are more legitimate and can often be used toward degrees from Canadian Universities.

If you already have a degree a post-graduate certificate from a college can be useful in some fields, or if you are facing a barrier from not having "Canadian experience" but not all college certificates are worthwhile. It sounds like you are on the right track being very diligent before believing what any educational institution offers you about their product. My own brother is in college right now (Confederation College in Thunder Bay) and I feel his professor is misleading him into enrolling in a useless certificate just because they need more students to enroll.
