Folks ,

I know its a norm , but I am questioning its validity without any guilt ..

Try to have a different incentive policy for the staff and don't burden the customer with unaccounted , unexhibited costs .... and if you have to do it , exhibit it ...

GuruLaxmi has done it and I am sure a lot of people have stopped visiting ....

Fids, By Bonus I meant Performance bonus (not profit sharing) which companies pay to employees based on their performance (rating). Tip is same, where you see server's performance (in your terms smile, politeness etc) and pay.

So why you take that extra performance bonus when you were already paid for your day to day activities ? what is the validity of such practice ? Why are'nt you questioning validity of performance bonus practice where you are the proud recipient ?

Still they are not the same ... Its an incentive offered by the employer much like commision to a salesman .... If you read previous pages , I have mentioned that if the employer makes an incentive policy for servers based on their working hours or number of tables waited upon , its alright ... its an employer induced incentive .

Why penalize the customer in the name of tip ?? Let the employers do it ..

It is just a waste of time to discuss whether to give tips or not...it is not going to change anybody's opinion about it..those who wont tip will never tip...especially people from South India...who are just "kanjoos"....all this "saving culture"...saving for the future generations....
heck man, they worry about each penny...miser to the core....

OK so now we have an added dimension ...South Indians ... :)

Heck if anyone decides to be miser , its his thought ... why should you call him anything ??

Not necessarily -- some will lose business , some will close down and some will take a dip in profits ...Well at least the fare would be accounted for .

I believe, it cost less to tip the person serving; so next time you visit, you are treated very well.

Otherwise, who knows, what's coming out of the kitchen area (maybe stale food !!! just a thought)

How do you know what s coming out of the kitchen is any different when you tip ...the kitchen may still be using inferior ingredients .... And if you don't tip well , you won't be treated well .... extortion ... hmmm ...

Why would people stop visiting if gratuity is added to bill? It does not affect the people who tip, it is only going to affect nontipper. It is restaurant owner's choice to go with that business model. It is opportunity cost for them. Should they spend their time and effort to serve people who are going to pay below the restaurant owner's expectation or spend that effort with people who would would meet their expectations. Businesses cannot survive unless they make money. If you invest a few hundred thousand dollars in a business, you will also have some expectation about income.
