To clarify, I'm not trying to be disparaging in my earlier posts. The bigger point I was trying to make here is that the culture/norms of a place are defined and created by small actions all of us take as inidividuals. A little courtesy here and there and thinking about others may not seem much, however adds up to a LOT when put together as a society. This is a huge difference between the culture here and back home and is very evident when you interact with people.

The reality is we as immigrants are shaping the Canada of the future for our kids, whether we like it or not. It is up to us whether we continue the good practices or convert things to look like back home, from where we made a conscious decision to immigrate.

To RajC - I am not contradicting myself anywehre ... Impose gratuity , let the biz take care of the employees exhibit the cost correctly and let the customers decide .... GL increases the prices - I may decide not to visit for this reason .. that s fair ...But don't quote $5/- and expect me to pay $10/- .
BTW - I don't remember saying that I stopped because of the gratuity ..Did I ?

To BL - Nobody immigrated here for not tipping back home !!! You are pehaps putting all norms together .... they are different .. some good , some not so good .

The reason why you & I immigrated are because the resources are abundant and the population less so you can afford these pleasentries .... Make the population 100x and the resources 50x and all your cultural pleasentries will fly out of the window .. first thing .

Not true . Don't you negotiate the price of a car when you go to a show room ... Guess where does that cut come from ?? More likely the salesman's commision .

The benefit of a gratuity model is that things are not hidden and unaccounted prices are not ambiguous .. like in a tip model .. There s enough competiton in the market -- if they take on the gratuity model , some will absorb the costs , some will get finished and some will even move to self service model ... And it will be fair to the servers as well as currently their earnings are at the discretion of the customer ...

Hmm...and why exactly is it that way? Did it land from heaven? You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that the cultural norms had something to do with it.

Your analogies of bribery to tipping, working in restuarant as waiter vs. working at a Timmys, forced gratuity vs. tip, immigrating for not tipping etc. show some really stellar comprehension. And thus I'll bid this thread adieu. Have a nice day! :)

Cultural norms was what brought you to Canada ..... Are you trying to tell me that ??

If that were the case then every body would be happy in Canada and we would not have some many disgruntled posts about Canada on the forum .... People came in for an economic motive regardless of the cultural norms ...

You have a good day too !!!

Or cultural norms led this place to be resource abundant ? Not true either .... places around the Globe which are resource abundant and have expats / immigrants heading for are culturally very different ...

Its more because of economic norms that we move .

You can bargain whatever you want but do they sell you at a loss? Would salesman and the dealership itself be there if they were not making any money?
