Hi,

I have got an offer from an IT services organization in their Halifax office. I am interested in moving from Bangalore, India to Halifax. The offer is close to $ 65K. I would like to know if it is a good salary to start my life in Canada. My family is small and consist of me and my spouse. I would like to know how much the rents would come out and apartment locations closer to my office space in Bayers Rd, Halifax. Since I won't be having an access to car, I would relying on public transport. It would be great if some one could advise me apartments where there are friendly communites staying (preferably having some presence from India). Also it would be great if you advise the current cost of living in halifax which could consist of a 1BHK apartment, food costs and public transport costs.

My spouse is an HR. What is the job prospects for an HR who has around 6.3 years of experience in India.

Thanks,
Sajeesh

Sajeesh,
You should take up this offer. Your job in India will go to another Indian or it may go to your USA head and lead to employment in USA.
65K is a decent salary. Halifax is a very cheap place to live in. 1BHK will not be more than 800 $ a month with all utilities.
Apart from IT, jobs are hard to come by in Canada. Any Halifax specific person can guide you further on that.
All the very best.

Peace

You haven't specified the role and skill set. If the role is in IT infrastructure, this is a good salary and if it is in SAP domain, it is not even a peanut.

It is a very good salary to start your life in Canada. Doesn't matter what role.

For HR, I would recommend to do some Payroll and/or HR certifications, e.g. CHRP (Certified HR Professional). These do add value to the resume. Get her started with some administration role and then move up the ladder. If possible, you can also get her enroll in any local community college for a short term HR course. Please remember that, above all else the communication and presentation skills matter a lot when try to find the job, especially in functional areas such as HR.

To start with, don't opt for the 2 bedroom condos. Go with the one bedroom decent but affordable accomodation. Additionally, in my opinion you shouldn't spend more than $700-800 per month for the same.

I am sure, you'll be alright and do great. Good luck!

Depends where your office is and where you live. Halifax is a nice small town with a very good balance of work and life. We are living here for the past 5 years and enjoying every moment, 65K is decent salary by Halifax standard. There are not too many avenues to spend money so you will be able to save. Real estate is not very expensive. Initially life will be tough but you will sail through.
