Hi ,
I came to Canada on a student Visa and the applied for Permanent residence from here. The application was transferred to Detroit for personal interview at Canadian consulate….that meant I required a US visitor visa.
I started with calling up the U.S. Consulate General in Toronto…getting an appointment (with a wait time of almost 30 days)…was sent a list of documents required to support my non –immigrant visa application (Ds-156).

B1/B2: Visitor for Business/ Pleasure - list of documents
•DS-156 (application form). .....................(Asked for 1 day visa to US)
•Valid Passport (at least 6 months).
•Proof of legal status in Canada: ..............(my study permit which is still valid till Dec2006)
•One passport-size photo.
•US$100 non-refundable application fee.
•Visa issuance fee (if applicable). [Paid US $50]
•Proof of sufficient funds to cover all expenses while in the U.S
•Evidence which show the purpose of trip.......... (Interview letter from Candian consulate –Detroit)

•Proof of ties/residence in a country outside the U.S. which have no intentions of abandoning.

I guess this was the trickiest part to convince the officer that I am surely going to be back in Toronto after my interview at Detroit.Fortunately in my case, I had a final exam scheduled on April 27, 2005 and I had PR interview on April 26th.

So I got a letter from the registrar’s office saying I am currently registered as full time student for the session running from. Jan –April 30 2005...&...I have an exam on April 27, 2005 ….and that I am also eligible to register in session running from May –Aug 2005.

I also took with me my transcripts from the University and my final exam time –table printout just in case they wanted to confirm if I really had an exam.
.....….......…..and hoped they didn’t ask for anything more…..................

I had interview at 9:00 am..Reached consulate at around 7:45am…Few people in the queue were let in and so I also got in at the same time. After few minutes of security check everyone was asked in to go in thru a door and wait in the corridor ….were asked to arrange copy of Ds-156form, 1 Photograph and the Deposit slip in the passport. When the counter opened the security let us all in (10 people at a time)…when my turn came I handed my passport to the lady and she asked me to wait in the waiting area…until your name is called by an officer. After sometime at around 8.45am …The officer called out \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Indian Passport holder.........….” I knew I was a step closer to getting my PR…When I reached the counter. I greeted the lady and then she took my index fingerprints. The interview went off really smooth. She asked me very few questions.(Thank-God for that).

1.Why you want to go to US. ?
I said-“I had a personal Interview at Canadian consulate –Detroit.” I showed her the Interview letter.

2.Show me something from your University?
I showed her the registrar’s letter. She read it and gave it back to me.

That’s it …then she told me-“I am giving you a single entry visa”..asked me to pay the visa issuance fee of US $50 and gave a slip to come and collect the passport the next day. I dared to not ask her for a multiple entry….but she told me that when I am a landed Immigrant I can always apply for a multiple entry.
I wish she had given me a multiple entry.. I could have gone to Detroit again to get my visa endorsed as my medicals are in now.

Hope that helps,(bit lengthy post):) anyone in the same boat please feel free to contact me.

Good-Luck.
