Hi Friends.

As it will be a concern of many new immigrants already landed in last few months and in line for next few months, to tackle the problems realted to winters and snow in Toronto. I want you to answer the following questions and new questions and issues by other readers will be even more helpful.

1. what kind of Shoes one need in Snow?? how much do they cost approximatly??

2. Will the Indian Jackets be of some use in Snow?? do we require waterproof outer clothing or we can take some kind of Umbrella etc?? do we need a water proof pants also or the normal pants will do?? Also the approximate cost of of this kind of winter outfit in canada??

3. Also tell us something about the kind of bedding to be used. About availability of matress and the quelts/blankets. Do we need to carry the blankets fom India, if already available in our homes.

4. Also, eloborate some details about the inner wears?? do we need to bring woolen sweater/pants to we worn under normal clothes??

Any other related information will also help.

P.S. Also write something about heating system in homes and factories etc..

Normal leather shoes are ok - if you don't have to walk on walkways too much. The people using car should not have any problem, but when you travel by TTC (buses) than you will need good shoes. There are snow shoes available in market, but I haven't seen many people wearing it. There are also outer shoes (overshoes) available. For kids you must get good snow shows - as they are always going to use snow covered fields to walk, play and run!

Please note that the shoes must be water tight.

Cost is approximately $50.

Not at all. You need to have leather or synthatic jackets. The outer coathing should be water proff. You also need a hood (or jacket with hood). Waterproof pants are not required. A good jeans is enough.

Interestingly all jackets are coming from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh!

As you live in North, you should have good winter leather jackets. They should be OK here.

Approximate Cost: $60 to $100

Inside heating system must maintain temperature of 21 degrees. This is law here. So in winter at the most you have to use one blanket. However we have comfertors (quilts) available here with reasonable cost. I think around $20.

I suggest to comeup with good blankets from Raymond. They are very effective.

However some appartment owners (very few, where desis are living) are cheates and don't follow the law, so you will feel chill and have to protect yourself well.

Not required if you use or Car. If you are not exposed to the weather for long time (say more than 30 minutes) it is not required. I have never used it!

All the offices, busses, trains, public buildings, schools, houses, shopping malls, stores are heated enough. All cars by default are coming with heating system. So don't feel that we are only freezing.... There are people who work in downtown having underground parking so they don't have to face the outside weather. There are also houses with remote garage door opener and apartmetns with underground parking. And there are shopping malls with underground parking. So if you wish you can stay away from snow!!!
