Hi everybody,
I have heard a lot about the PMI certification (PMP and CAPM) and I was wondering if it is only of significance for the IT industry or professionals?

I have an outstanding experience in the engineering management (consulting and construction) and was wondering if a PMP certification for me will be as vauable as it is for the an IT professional? if not, any thoughts on a Canadian/US equivalent for a PMP for the construction industry?

Your comments/advice will be much appreciated :)

I have a suggestion:

Can you do informational interviews or contact Recruiters or employers in your field to ask this question? Its a very good question however sometimes its best to get it 'from the horses mouth' so to speak (ie/ people that work in the field). Also, go through job ads and see what requirements are being posted. This should give you some information.

Good luck

From what I've seem it's widely accepted in the IT field. The previous version of the PMBOK was geared towards IT, however the new version has moved a little away from it. The new version was released in Sep. 05. In a few months we'll find out if other industries are starting to embrace it.

One of the main reason why the IT industry has embraced PMP is 'cause most of contents of the PMBOK mainly applies to an IT environment.

Thanks morning_rain & sudesingh for the vaulable input. I guess what is a bit frustrating here is the fact that I can't find a central Canadian body that regulates the project management as a profession (regardless of the industry) despite the fact that the importance of the poject management as a professions and a science is growing by the day. There are a few institutes around but they seem to be very localized or ,in most of the cases, are mainly focussed on PM training.

...and most of them offer courses that are again based on the PMBOK. SO you're back to square 1. :D
