Hi,

I have been planning to move to Windsor and got some real help from Mahen on this forum. I talked to him a couple of times too. Thanks to him for his help.

Here is my situation now.

I went to Windsor last week end and rented a one bed room aprtment (for $650). Windsor is such a small place that you can go around most of the town in a couple of hours. There are many aprtment complexes, but I am not sure what is good or what is bad. I talked to a Bangladesi there and found an apartment. It's on the mill street (closer to the bride - hardly 5 minutes & Univ. of Windsor).

If some body could help me, here are my questions now .

1. I have a 2005 Honda accord bought in US 6 months ago. if I want to import it, I think, I have to pay about $3000 CAN as duties/gst etc. So, please let me know if I can register the car on my company's name in US and then get a letter from the company saying that it's a company provided car so that I do not have to import it and pay taxes, but keep using the car. Is it a practical thing to do? Do I run into any kind of problems at the border or in Windsor town?

2. I am going to drop my family in Windsor in about 10 days time by car and want to keep the car with them till I find an alternative. But to come back to US from Windsor, I will not have a car. Is there any shuttle service/cab service which can drop me at a car rental company in Detroit from Windsor? or Can I rent a car in Windsor and give it back in US (in any city)?

Thanks a lot.

>>>> I don't know when you landed. However, you might be able to import the vehicle (as you say) and therefore be exempt from duties. You may talk to the border agents. You can call them. They are pretty decent about answering questions. To import the vehicle, visit http://www.riv.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK for all the necessary info. The fee you will pay is about $180 or so plus any modification charges you incur (usually about $300 or less) during import <<<<<

So, please let me know if I can register the car on my company's name in US and then get a letter from the company saying that it's a company provided car so that I do not have to import it and pay taxes, but keep using the car. Is it a practical thing to do? Do I run into any kind of problems at the border or in Windsor town?

<<<<< As a Canadian resident, you are technically not allowed to drive a US plated vehicle for more than, I think, 30 days. Who would track that...nobody knows. The bigger issue is when you want to use the vehicle to cross the border. Besides getting a letter from your company, you may have to provide details of why you will be using your employer's US plated car in Canada and you will be asked to obtain a Commuter Conveyance Permit which has a validity term of not more than 1 year.>>>>>

Is there any shuttle service/cab service which can drop me at a car rental company in Detroit from Windsor?

<<<< Any cab in Windsor will take you across the border to anywhere you want. There is a tunnel bus that runs between detroit downtown and Windsor downtown through the tunnel. You can obtain info from online.>>>>>

or Can I rent a car in Windsor and give it back in US (in any city)?

<<<<<Most probably not. You will have to call the individual rental companies and inquire their policies.>>>>>

Thanks for answering some of my questions.

I landed on March 27,2005 and it's almost a year. At that time, I did not have a car and hence could not include it in the 'goods to follow' list. I talked to border agents and they told me that I have to pay up to 15% of taxes on the car price to import it.

Thanks for giving me the clue that I can try for a temporary conveyance permit.

Thanks again.

I would appreciate if any bodu could provide more details on it.

Hello Bro,

It s called Vehicle import program, known as RIV program

Just fax your Michigan vehicle title to US custom and Immigration by Ambassdor bridge.
Fax is 313-226-5347 and please double check the fax number with any border crossing US CBP officers and they will give.

You need to fax it 72 hours prior to import.
After 72 hours passed, go with importing vehicle to

2810 West Fort Street
Detroit, MI 48216-0000
313-226-3139 tel
313-226-5347 fax
Open 24-7

and tell CBP officers that you want to export this vehicle to Canada.
CBP officers match your title with already faxed one(what ever u faxed 72 hrs before they will have it on the file)

That it in US side and they will tell to go to one specific door which will lead to Canada ambassodor bridge.U have to wait by that door since one field CBP officer will visit every 30 minutes.,some time even it will take longer and mostly u will be alone waiting there.Once CBP fieldofficer arrivrd there just show the paper and he'll open the door.

Now you are crossing the Ambassodor bridge.

Tell Canadain Custom officer that you are RELOCATING TO CANADA WITH YOUR VEHICLE AND WANTED TO IMPORT THE VEHICLE.

Booth officer from canada site will send you to office which is beside there.

Inside the office tell them you had this vehicle and reloactin to Canada.
As I know if you had the vehicle for more than 2 years then u don't want to pay any GST that time.Otherwise you have and and it will decide by the Bluebook value of your car.
Since you are relocating with your used own vehicle ,some time they will let you to go without any tax.

Once all done you have to go pay $200 for IRV online. Then u have to go to Cnadian tire to check some Canadian regulation to make sure your US imported car meet those...such as daylight light. If you car is 2005 honda then all will be fine.Canadian tire you don't need to pay any since what ever you paid $200 IRV will cover all.

Same time you have to contact your US Honda cutomer service and ask then to send a letter saying that your specific VIN# vehicle "DOES NOT HAVE ANY OUTSTADING RECALLS"

after all done go to Canada vehicle registration place and get the Canadian plate. If you don't pay any GST by the border then you don't need to pay any PST at the local Canadian vehicle registration office.

It is very simple and easy but take some time.

I did it for my car and I paid only 200$ to IRV only.no any other cost.

good luck
