Reframing my question
I have back pain. Should I visit a physiotherapist or a chiropractor? My family doctor has already written a prescription to provide therapy
What things should I look out for or consider before going to his office?

I have had chronic back pain as well.
I have gone to both Chiro's and Physiotherapy.
Physiotherapy in my experience is much more effective. There is strengthening exersize/stretching. You will also be given exercizes to do at home..
The best thing to do is strengthen your back muscles/tummy muscles.
I have gone to a few different physiotherapists and I am very pleased with my current one.
Assess the physio before you begin a series of treatments. The therapist should be
a) able/willing to discuss your pain - listen to your symptoms and offer exersizes to do at home.
b) Able to give you an idea of how long the treatments should be (*ie/ how many u may require).
You must feel comfortable and be able to trust the physiotherapist. Go with your instincts.
Apparently Yoga and/or Pilates are good for the back.
Here's a simple exersize I do (its quick and very effective if i start feeling slight sorness in my back) - I got this from my physiotherapist:
Sit on a chair and put a ball between your knees (it can be a child's bouncing ball ..it doesnt matter as long as it can withstand being sqeezed) and sqeeze ur knees together to a count of 15 and then relax. Hold your stomach muscles tight as you do this.
I was in severe pain when i started going to physiotherapy. I was so bad that i couldnt sit/stand or lie down for more than 20 minutes at a time. I was literally awake 24 hours a day because any position was too uncomfortable. I then began taking T3's (about 4-6 a day!) ... Physio helped me.
You have to go to orthopaedic Doctor, who will show you 5-10 mts excercise to do daily morning and everning. You will be cured for life.I can show you excercise but then you will have to come to my place. It is superb excercise for everybody if one don't want back pain in future.

Gopalpai: I understand your zeal to help, and even if you are a certified physiotherapist. a chiropractor, or a orthopedic specialist, you should not claims such as "You will be cured for life".
In Canada, even specialists in the field of medicine will shy away from giving a time frame for a cure, or guarantee that the pain will never be back. Each person's condition is unique, and responds differently to each method of treatment
I say this not just to make you feel small. It took me several months to get relief from pain - in the back of the neck and shoulder. A "cure" is a few more months away. By the way , I have met with some of the best practitioners of medicine , in Canada.
My personal experience with chiropractors was not good, and I went in for physiotherapy, which helped me a great deal.
Meghal - if you are looking for a physiotherapist in Mississauga, please send me a PM.
Hope this helps.
