First question: Who are we to tell them how to lead their lives? Every civilization / culture has values which may be different from ours and may be considered bad/abhorrent/despicable/(insert your word here). Killing baby girls is THEIR decision. The majority of the people who kill their baby girls live in abject poverty , for them letting the girl live may seem like too harsh a punishment to give to the little kid.

Second Question: When is the last time you SACRIFICED something of value to support your beliefs? When you believe in something and do NOTHING when somebody acts against that belief what is the value of your belief? If you consider yourself powerless to change the world then why waste time on beliefs?

Let the firefight begin! :D

Majority of the people who kill their baby girls live in abject poverty ?? Hello ?
Since history in our culture women were treated as an object and not human beings and considered outsider( not part of the family). There are worshiped and killed in our culture. The basic mentality it to change , women are human begins.

secondly girls are not treated equal. The place where I come ( if you dont know the state is Kerala) they are treated equally ( even before marriage and after marriage they still have rights). there is no bias

thirdly. I dont know why indian thinks , their linage has to continue. Why worry about it when you are dead in few years time. Have a life

you say people who get abortions live in abject poverty ....
( people who live in poverty can they afford to pay the costs of abortion ????? ) ...

also what will happen if everybody starts killing girls in the womb or after birth .....

I am wondering what will happen to the lineage then .....

MR, that's a interesting question. My take on it is this: I think it's a great idea. I don't know about India, but having lived in western society all my life I feel there is an immense pressure to have kids...although not necessarily the need. There is a difference between want and need...and what I've learnt is that parents of poorer societies tend to have many children. Why? Because the death rate is high (probably due to desease, malnutrition, etc.) and there is a higher chance of your child making it to adulthood the more children you have. This in turn ensures that the parents will have someone (ie, their sons) to take care of them in later life.

In western society, this is not the case...having children is not a necessity, it is a want (and I'm not disregarding a woman's inate instinct to bare children, I'm just looking at it from a sociological point of view) Two people can marry and live their life together without ever wanting to have kids...personally I don't think there is anything wrong with it, however society says (and particularly 'Indian' society and also many others too) that you marry and have children.

As for continuing lineage, I think it's a deeper issue in that you as an individual don't want to die and not leave anything of yourself behind...but if you have children, well that's your legacy isn't it? But I think that's deep biological stuff that is inbedded in us.

Actually the declining birth rate in western societies may yet make this a necessity. Lesser kids means depleting future work force. When the number of people depending on social security(pensions, medicare etc) is significantly larger than the number of people supporting the system (i.e the active workforce)...this places pressure on the social security system as is the likely future for many western countries.

So if the social security system cannot be sustained...people will probably have to work even into their old age to care for themselves adequately.
A case of reaping what we sow OR is it not reaping what we dont sow :)?

Ofcourse we can always import future generations of workers...afterall, thats how we immigrants got here.

Hi Pink Panther,

Thanks for your reply. I think there are also other ways to leave a legacy. What about neices/nephews? What about leaving something to your community or country? What about creating something that generations of people will use/read/rely on?

just arguements for friday morning!

Quite right! I guess the growing trend of not having kids will have a major impact on our future.

I'm not sure what the main reason for not having kids is?

Do you think it's selfish to not want kids and to concentrate on your own career/life?
