The trick to get ad money is actually quite simple but very difficult to acheive.....namely have a huge, relevant audience. Once that is done you need to contact propspective advertisers yourself, they wont come to you obviously.
Try some link building, seo optimization, viral advertizing etc.

Nice generic answer. SEO optimization (which, by the way includes link building) does not get you more advertisers. SEO optimization does not get you \"huge relevant audience\". I don't understand what you mean by relevant audience. Relevant to who / what?
Other points about SEO optimization
- SEO Optimization costs money but you are still behind the five other sponsored results.
- You only show up if someone searches - which could be never. For example - investpro's site about South Asian achievers. Why would I do a search on that topic? Now if there was a news item about some achiever and right next to it was an ad for the site - i'd be interested. So SEO optimization does not get you where your audience is.
- Search engines keep changing the algorithm frequently to thwart "unnatural" results.
- finally SEO Optimization only gets you up on the results. It does not mean \"stickyness\" or click-thrus for your advertisers.
So on the whole, my advise would be to do some SEO optimization (never a bad thing) but focus on attracting traffic in different ways. I would also focus on content as a draw. And depending on your site - you may have to focus on the \"value proposition\" for different visitors. (I won't go into detail regarding this but if you want to know more - just PM me)
As a buyer of advertising space (online and offline)- I can tell you - SEO optimization means nothing. There are sites out there that you could not find if you had a goggle engineer find it for you. But they draw traffic using \"other\" means. eg most social networking sites. What an advertiser cares about is the ROI of the campaign. Deliver that and you have advertisers.
Even this is a generic answer because I do not know Investpro's site. But I hope it gets the thread rolling.

The issue is - where are you going with this thread? I noticed a few online businessmen here already and I thought you were going to discuss ideas and strategies etc.
Unless of course you are just shopping for ideas and scoping the competition.
