I had heard of this before, but never read it in the news.
The best thing to do is to (physically) disconnect your webcam from the PC when you dont use it.
Recently I have been receiving IM from friends who are offline (at very ODD hours when they are supposed to asleep) asking to click on link which open into an MSN lookalike website for photographs requesting to sign in to view the snaps....I am sure it is phising scam, but would like to alert other CDs.

Anyone who is a little bit tech savvy will tell you that this is a hoax.
I wish it is a hoax, but the news makes me believe there is something to it which cannot be ignored. I am not very Tech savvy and dont understand how complex connections work, but if you google, you can find so many open cameras which you can view and some even control. Most of them are intended for general public viewing, but some are private cameras too..not sure if they were intended for general public..
Better safe than sorry...

Yes, you see such private cameras ... but only when Computer is Powered ON & Connected to Internet.
I am not saying camera cannot be hacked - but only when computer is Powered ON & Connected to Internet.

Yes Maharaj, I know thats a prime requirement. But I also know that my computer STAYS on for most part of day - I generally switch it on first thing in the morning and switch off the last thing before going to bed. With High speed internet, it always connected. I am sure this is the case with many of us.
Hope technically aware/qualified IT CDs will shed more light on this...
For the time being, like I mentioned before - better safe than sorry - my webcam is disconnected until I wish to use it.

Yes Maharaj, even i was wondering how a camera can capture pictures when its OFF but when i was speaking to someone about this news he told me that he also heard this sometime back that camera CAN function even when its OFF.I donno how far its TRUE but as hiren said "prevention is better than cure" (just in case it is true).
