Hi seniors,

I am a new immigrant, landed in Nov'13 for 15 days and came back. Since I intend to move for goods in near future, so one of my friends advised me to submit my tax returns online right now. I just have to put zero income and that's all, no big maths involved. Should I do it as advised, or better to submit return through some tax expert while I am physically present in Canada. Will filing returns now on line will make my countdown (of 90 days for receiving the child care benefits) start now itself ! Thanks

Dude,
Cool down.
CCTB/UCCB etc.. are all available only when you are physically present in Canada. So you will be eligible for the 15 days, if your children also landed with you.
First tax canot be done online, it has to be done physically. May be it can be done, with out you here but the Tax authorities may call you or your tax filer to verify. Most tax agencies (esp. desi) do that , after charging $ 100 or $ 200.
You may not be eligible for HST benefits while you are not in Canada so what is the big deal in filing.
In my case I received HST credits for 1 year after moving to India but then I received a notice after a year asking me to repay the over payments which i did.

In short, you are eligible for everything only when you are inside Canada and hence how does it matter when you file your tax return etc..

Come, live in Canada, and enjoy what my country has to offer to you.

Cheers !

Murali

First Tax is always paper filing , not online. not yet and you start getting CCTB/UCCB after landing (and applying) without filing the taxes, later gets adjusted in case you declare income above a threshhold.

TK / SH :

The electronic filing options (EFILE or NETFILE) are now available for newcomers to Canada for the 2013 and subsequent tax years.

This is the latest change. Source : CRA website http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/newcomers/

Hasni, You can file return based on CRA website.

Relevant text copy pasted from CRA

Do you have to file a tax return?
As a resident of Canada for income tax purposes for part or all of a tax year (January 1 to December 31), you must file a tax return if you:
owe tax; or
want to claim a refund.

Even if you have no income to report or tax to pay, you may be eligible for certain payments or credits. In order to receive the following payments or credits, you must file an income tax return.

the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit;
Canada child tax benefit payments; and
payments from certain related provincial or territorial programs.

Dear seenimesh, thanks for useful info, truly appreciate your input. Looking at my case do you think that I have established required residential ties with Canada after which it becomes obligatory for me to file tax, I guess not. Just a 15 days short landing and came back. Because what I have understood from the link you provided, I need to establish enough residential ties with Canada to be able to file tax or claim any benefits, which apparently I haven't yet ! Please correct me if I am wrong and suggest if I should still go ahead with filing my tax online right now.
