Sadly, I never had that opportunity to convert INR into CAD

Well, the best option i can suggest is to open an account with ICICI-Canada. My guess, conversion from ICICI-India to ICICI-Canada would give you better rate.

Keep in mind, bringing over $10K has to be declared and might be taxed.

Legal way is to do it through banks in India. It is subject to regulations like FEMA.
